Tom Taylor - December 10, 2018
Last Saturday night, on the undercard of UFC 231 in Toronto, Eryk Anders got his long-awaited fight with Canada’s Elias Theodorou. While Anders had Theodorou visibly hurt in the second round — perhaps even enough to justify a 10-8 score — Theodorou was ultimately awarded a split decision win on the basis of his success his success in the first and third frames. While Eryk Anders has been classy in the wake of this loss, he recently announced his intention to fight in America for his next few fights, where he’s less likely to face any sort of judging bias.

With the win, Anders was hoping he could fight a ranked opponent before the end of the year. Well, Anders got his wish, but he was fighting 12 ranked middleweight Thiago Santos at light heavyweight in the main event for UFC Sao Paulo, just a month after his win over Williams. Anders took the fight on just days’ notice as the former Alabama linebacker flew to Brazil to fight in the main event.

Unfortunately, Anders could not regain his footing once the round was over. Although it his cornermen attempted to peel him off the canvas, he collapsed not once, but twice, which prompted referee Marc Goddard to wave the fight off.

Originally, last night’s UFC Sao Paulo card was supposed to be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Jimi Manuwa and Glover Teixeira. Unfortunately, Teixeira was then forced out of the fight with an injury and replaced by beefed-up middleweight Thiago Santos. Then, in the midst of fight week, Manuwa was forced out of the fight with an injury of his own and replaced by rising middleweight contender Eryk Anders, who took the fight on a mere 5 days notice. Given that the middleweight Eryk Anders took this light heavyweight fight on just 5 days notice, there’s really no way to fault him for coming up short — especially since he put up one hell of a fight until the referee stopped the fight between the third and fourth rounds.
