Dominick Reyes is standing by his UFC 327 victory over Johnny Walker.

Reyes, a two-time title challenger at light heavyweight, met Walker on the event’s main card. Ahead of time, the bout seemed to have a lot of potential for excitement, as both Reyes and Walker are capable of producing very impressive knockouts at their best. However, the fight ended up falling far short of expectations. For three rounds, the two light heavyweight contenders threw almost nothing at each other, leaving fans nodding off in their seats in the process.

Reyes doesn’t get the hate.

Speaking to the media assembled at UFC 327, he defended his performance. He labelled it “technical” rather than the more common assessment of “boring.”

Dominick Reyes shrugs of UFC 327 controversy

“I did expect him to be a little more aggressive, but this is super f**king dangerous game, man,” Reyes said. “It was a good technical fight.

“I was making adjustments for my coaches,” Reyes continued. “The game plan got switched up because I expected him to step into range more. I had to force the action and wobble him a few times. I don’t think I over-gameplanned or anything like that. I was fighting a guy who was getting in, not going. It’s difficult to fight like that.”

Even if Reyes is wrong in his assessment, which is totally subjective, he claims winning is more important than entertaining fans. After all, he has a young son at home. He needs to collect his win bonus to provide more effectively.

“You know, being Dominick Reyes, people expect me to go all crazy,” he said. “Go for the knockout or get knocked out, but I have a son and I have to come home with two checks more than anything. Getting two checks means more than being entertaining.”

With his win over Walker, Reyes rebounded from a knockout loss to Carlos Ulberg, now the division’s champion.
