Jorge Masvidal expecting to be #1 contender with win over Demian Maia

bjpenndotcom - May 3, 2017

#5 ranked UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal put together arguably one of the most impressive runs in 2016. After snapping a 2-fight skid by defeating Ross Pearson via unanimous decision. Following that, Masvidal picked up a controversial TKO win over Jake Ellenberger after ‘The Juggernaut’ got his big toe stuck in the cage wall. Most recently, Masvidal picked up a performance of the night bonus for his TKO win over Donald Cerrone, which snapped Cerrone’s four-fight win streak. Now, with Masvidal’s upcoming #1 contender fight with Demian Maia next weekend quickly approaching, the top ranked welterweight is questioning if he will truly be crowned the welterweight #1 contender with a win over Maia.

Jorge Masvidal gives prediction for UFC 211 showdown with Demian Maia

Tom Taylor - March 30, 2017

Back in January, UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal scored a career-altering knockout win over the streaking Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. This win sent the American Top Team staple rocketing up the UFC welterweight rankings. In the wake of this win, Masvidal quickly began calling for a fight with top welterweight contender Demian Maia. While Maia initially seemed reluctant to accept this fight, stating that he would prefer to wait for a shot at the title, he eventually signed on the dotted line. The two welterweights will go at it on the main card of UFC 211 this May 13.

Demian Maia glad Georges St-Pierre is returning at middleweight

bjpenndotcom - March 14, 2017

This month, news surfaced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre had signed a new multi-fight UFC contract, and would be returning to the UFC for a middleweight showdown with UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping later this year. While top ranked UFC welterweight Demian Maia may currently be booked to fight Jorge Masvidal in a fight that many believe could potentially see Maia crowned the welterweight #1 contender, Maia is thankful that St-Pierre chose to return at middleweight, rather than cutting to the front of the line for a welterweight title shot.

This past weekend at UFC 209, welterweights Tyron ‘The Chosen One’ Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated rematch for Woodley’s welterweight title. With Woodley winning the fight via majority decision and retaining his belt for the 2nd time, many expect Demian Maia to get the next welterweight title shot if Maia manages to defeat Jorge Masvidal on May 13th at UFC 211.

Georges St-Pierre expects Demian Maia to become UFC welterweight champion

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

When former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre makes his long awaited comeback later this year, it will be to a middleweight title shot, not to a shot at the welterweight belt. That said, the former champ does still pay attention to the division he ruled for so long, and he’s particularly impressed by one welterweight contender in particular: streaking grappling whiz Demian Maia. The former champ showered Maia with praise on Monday’s edition of the MMA Hour. His words:

Demian Maia gives his scorecard for UFC 209's main event

Tom Taylor - March 6, 2017

Last Saturday, in the main event of UFC 209, champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson fought for the UFC welterweight title. Just like their first fight, which occurred back in November and ended with a majority draw, this one was very close, as Woodley walked away with a hotly contested majority decision win. In the wake of this extremely close battle, Demian Maia, who is arguably the top contender in the UFC welterweight division, made an appearance on The MMA Hour and offered his scorecard for the fight. Contrary to the official decision, the Brazilian grappling specialist says he scored the fight for Wonderboy, and speculated that the judges were swayed by Woodley’s surge late in the fifth round.

Tyron Woodley talks Demian Maia title snub

bjpenndotcom - March 2, 2017

With an impressive 6-fight win streak, many believed that Demian Maia would be up for the next welterweight title shot after Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson fought at UFC 205. Ultimately however, after Woodley retained his belt following a majority draw, the UFC opted to book a rematch between the two men for UFC 209, which takes place this Saturday. Demian Maia was left without a title fight, and was subsequently booked for a fight with Jorge Masvidal, which rubbed many fans the wrong way.

Demian Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal set for UFC 211

bjpenndotcom - February 28, 2017

News broke Tuesday afternoon at Jorge Masvidal vs. Demian Maia would be taking place at UFC 211 in May. The news came after a period of uncertainty following reports earlier in the week that Masvidal and Maia would be fighting in Nashville in April according to MMAJunkie. No word on whether the fight will take place on the preliminary card or pay-per view portion of the UFC 211 card, however given the magnitude of the scrap, fight fans can expect the fight to be placed on the main card.

Contrary to Maia-Masvidal reports, Cub Swanson says he's still in the UFC Nashville main event

Tom Taylor - February 28, 2017

Late last week, reports of a massive welterweight contender bout between Demian Maia and Jorge Masvidal began to surface. Though this fight has not yet been announced by the UFC, these reports suggested that this fight would serve as the main event of the UFC’s April 22 trip to Nashville, Tennessee. If this was indeed the case, this would mean that Cub Swanson’s recently announced featherweight battle with Artem Lobov would not serve as the main event, as originally expected. According to Swanson himself, however, his fight with Lobov will still serve as Nashville’s main event. The featherweight star has apparently confirmed this with the UFC.

Demian Maia set to return in the main event of UFC Nashville against Jorge Masvidal

Chris Taylor - February 26, 2017

Top UFC welterweight contender Demian Maia has opted to take another fight instead of waiting for the winner of next weekend’s UFC 209 main event title fight between Stephen Thompson and Tyron Woodley. According to a report from Brazilian news outlet Combate, the submission specialist has agreed to square off with Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC Nashville on April 22.

Following his dominant first-round submission victory over former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit at UFC on FOX 21 this past August in Vancouver, Demian Maia was told by UFC officials that he would get to face the winner of UFC 205’s welterweight title fight between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson next. Unfortunately for the Brazilian submission specialist, the title fight between Woodley and Thompson at UFC 205 ended in a majority draw, which prompted the promotion to book an immediate rematch between “Wonderboy” and “The Chosen One” for UFC 209 this upcoming Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Despite multiple fight offers, Demian Maia will wait "no matter what" for next title shot

Tom Taylor - February 6, 2017

In November of 2016, Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson battled for the UFC welterweight title. The winner was then expected to defend the title against streaking welterweight contender Demian Maia sometime in the new year. Unfortunately for Maia, who is arguably the best grappler in MMA, Woodley and Thompson fought to a frequently-debated majority draw. With this result, they were then booked for a rematch at UFC 209 on March 4, which put Maia’s long-awaited title shot on the back burner.

Demian Maia releases lengthy statement explaining why Masvidal fight won't happen

Tom Taylor - February 3, 2017

Late last month, in the co-main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Denver, Jorge Masvidal scored one of the biggest wins of his career, ending Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone’s win-streak with a second-round knockout. With this win, the American Top Team veteran burst into the ranks of the welterweight elite, where fights with fellow top contenders await. One such contender is Demian Maia, a BJJ specialist who, were it not for Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson’s recent draw and resulting rematch, would probably be scheduled for a title shot right now. Masvidal, unsurprisingly, is very interested interested in a fight with Maia, telling BJPENN.com he’d be happy to “whoop his ass.”

Luckily for Nick Diaz fans, UFC President Dana White is apparently making some real efforts to get him back in the cage. Though Diaz apparently turned down a fight with former champion Robbie Lawler, White has more recently attempted to coax him back to the Octagon by offering him a fight with the streaking Demian Maia.

After knockout of Matt Brown, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone wants Demian Maia

Tom Taylor - December 11, 2016

Last night, on the main card of an action-packed UFC 206, fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone dazzled with a thunderous third-round knockout of the notoriously durable Matt Brown. With this win, Cowboy improved to a fantastic 4-0 as a welterweight. Given his current streak, and the fact that he is now ranked well inside the welterweight top-10, Cowboy is ready to set his sights on the division’s uppermost players. On that note, the streaking welterweight revealed post-fight that he has his eyes on one potential opponent in particular: decorated grappling whiz Demian Maia.
