Darren Till: after win over Wonderboy “Woodley has to come to me”

By Tom Taylor - May 11, 2018

On May 27, in the main event of the UFC’s debut in Liverpool, England, Darren Till will take on two-time welterweight title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in a bout that is far and away the biggest test of his career thus far.

If Till topples this momentous challenge, he expects to become one of the most sought-after fighters in the stacked UFC welterweight division. In fact, he expects to become the division’s so-called “money fight,” which means divisional king Tyron Woodley will be banging on his door, and not the other way around. To Till, that implies a welterweight title fight inside Liverpool’s famous Anfield stadium.

Speaking on the first episode of his new video blog series, Till gave his take on what a win over Wonderboy will do for his station in the welterweight division.

“It’s Anfield,” Till tells UFC play-by-play man John Gooden in the video above (transcribed by Jim Edwards for MMANytt). “After I beat [Thompson], I become the money fight in the division and Woodley has to come to me.”

“I will shout and call for Anfield like you’ve never seen in your life and I will make it happen and Woodley will have to come to me,” he added.

Darren Till last fought in October, when he delivered an emphatic, first-round knockout at the expense of long-time contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the main event of the UFC’s stop in Gdansk, Poland. With this win, Till improved to a flawless 16-0-1 overall, the lone hiccup on his record being a 2015 draw with Nicolas Dalby.

While the winner of Darren Till’s fight with Stephen Thompson is likely to be right on the cusp of a title shot, the truth is that the winner of UFC 225’s interim welterweight title fight between Colby Covington and Rafael dos Anjos is almost certain to earn the next crack at Woodley.
