Prior to UFC 202 in August, where Conor McGregor stepped into the Octagon to avenge his UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz, UFC President Dana White stated that after the fight, McGregor must either drop back down to featherweight to defend his belt against interim champion Jose Aldo, or vacate the belt. After McGregor defeated Diaz via majority decision on the record breaking card, he remained openly confident that his next fight would take place at lightweight, despite the fact that Dana White was adamant about him either returning to 145, or vacating the belt.

Ahead of UFC 205 on November 12th, UFC President Dana White revealed that UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will be making a “personal” announcement “out of left field”. Of course, fans immediately began speculating as to what the announcement could be, given that the fight is arguably the biggest in UFC history. Reports began to emerge that McGregor was going to take around a year off to mend relationships with family members that had been strained by his busy work schedule. While there had been no word from McGregor himself, reports then began to emerge from people in McGregor’s camp stating that he would be taking a year off from fighting to help his girlfriend, Dee Devlin with the upcoming birth of their first child.

With that being said, UFC President Dana White has remained adamant that McGregor will indeed be forced to vacate one of the championships if he emerges from the historic scrap victorious. While McGregor was initially very reluctant to give up one of the belts, stating that the UFC brass would need an army to take one of them from him, he has since softened his stance, stating that before there are talks of him vacating a belt, he wants the world to see the historic photos of him victorious at UFC 205 with two title belts.

Not only is the fight slated to headline what is expected to be the biggest UFC card in the history of the promotion, it also could see McGregor crowned as the first fighter to ever simultaneously hold two title belts in two weight classes. With that being said, UFC President Dana White has remained adamant that should McGregor emerge from the fight victorious, he will be forced to vacate one of the belts. Initially, McGregor remained quite open about the fact that he had no intentions of relinquishing one of the belts, stating that it would take an army for the UFC brass to take one of his titles away. Lately however, he appears to have been softening his stance on the matter, stating that before he relinquishes a title, he wants to get photos of the historic moment when he wins two title belts.
