Having won the UFC featherweight title from Jose Aldo in December of 2015, he then went on to clobber Eddie Alvarez to win the organization’s lightweight title in November of 2016. With this defeat of Alvarez, he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes concurrently.

The talk of a dream match between UFC superstar Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather still has fans arguing about the outcome of a competition between the two icons. With Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal’s background doing some training with Floyd Mayweather’s The Money Team, “King Mo” was recently asked by BJPenn.com Radio host “Kinch” what his thoughts were on the much talked about matchup between Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

In March of this year, Nate Diaz shocked the world by submitting then featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the second round of a last-minute welterweight fight. Given McGregor’s previous dominance, and his status as MMA’s biggest star, he was given an immediate shot at redemption against Diaz. Though this rematch with Diaz was initially expected to headline UFC 200 in July, it ultimately occurred atop UFC 202 in August. When it finally did go down, McGregor nabbed a majority decision from Diaz, evening their score to 1-1 in a bona fide Fight of the Year contender. Given that McGregor and Diaz are now tied across two fights, a massive third fight between them seems like a pretty logical choice for the UFC. Their first two fights, after all, were two of the most successful pay-per-views in the promotion’s history.

Given his long-time dominance, and his status as the UFC’s biggest and most valuable star, McGregor was quickly given a shot at redemption against Diaz. Though his rematch was briefly scheduled as the main event of July’s UFC 200, it ultimately occurred a month later, atop UFC 202 in August. When it finally did occur, McGregor would defeat Diaz in a thrilling and competitive fight, nabbing a majority decision win and evening their score as he did.

Since his dominant UFC 205 win over Michael Johnson, top ranked UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov has been looking for a fight with lightweight champion Conor McGregor. While it was initially reported that McGregor would be sidelined for 10 months due to the upcoming birth of his firstborn child, the ‘champ champ’ recently stated that he could be returning to the Octagon much sooner than initially expected. This has led to even more controversy surrounding the lightweight title picture, and who will be getting the next lightweight title shot. While the UFC was initially looking to book Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson for an interim lightweight title fight, Ferguson then revealed that he planned to hold out for more money. This led to rumors of a potential Nate Diaz vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov interim title fight, however Jose Aldo’s manager was quick to reveal that Aldo was looking to move up to lightweight for an interim title fight.

While UFC President Dana White maintains that a boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Maywather will never happen, that hasn’t stopped both men from taking shots at one another in interviews in the media. Following Conor McGregor’s UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez that saw the Irish superstar claim the lightweight championship, McGregor and Mayweather began to send shots at one another in the media. This led to McGregor even going as far as to get his boxing license in California, stating in interviews that he was looking into taking other boxing fights in the meantime to prepare himself for a match with Mayweather.

There is a perfected recipe for UFC success with Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz being the two main ingredients. McGregor and Diaz who headlined UFC 196 and UFC 202 have two of the highest, if not the top two highest UFC pay-per-view buys in the history of the UFC. Diaz was able to shock the world and submit McGregor in the second round of their first meeting at UFC 196. Then McGregor came back to win the rematch at UFC 202 by majority decision and both events were a massive success.

Last month at UFC 205, Khabib Nurmedomedov cemented his place as the lightweight #1 contender when he picked up a horrifically dominant win over Michael Johnson. Nurmagomedov used his grappling skills to repeatedly take Johnson down, and land countless elbows, complete with trash talk to Johnson mid-fight, and a conversation with UFC President Dana White between rounds. Ultimately, in the third round ‘The Eagle’ was able to secure a submission, and get the win.

With former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Jon “Bones” Jones currently serving a year-long suspension, MMA’s pound-for-pound debate has typically come down to one man: Flyweight champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. When Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title in November, however, he made a strong case for a spot atop the pound-for-pound list, as he was already the champion at featherweight, and he had recently won a fight at welterweight against Nate Diaz. In the opinion of UFC President Dana White, McGregor’s recent multi-weight accomplishments make it impossible to deny his status as MMA’s pound-for-pound king. White explained this feeling in an interview on The Michael Kay Show (via MMAFighting.com).
