On Saturday night, in the co-main event of the action-packed Bellator 208 card, former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson picked up a dominant decision win over longtime Bellator lightweight contender Saad Awad. In his post-fight interview with Bellator MMA commentator John McCarthy, Benson Henderson could have taken a moment to call for another Bellator title shot, or perhaps a rematch with fellow lightweight contender Patricky Freire. Instead, however, the former champion used his post-fight interview as an opportunity to admonish UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor for their infamous UFC 229 post-fight brawl.

Former women’s bantamweight champion and current WWE star Ronda Rousey certainly does. In Rousey’s opinion, this post-fight brawl is the kind of thing the UFC should work hard to avoid in the future.

Last weekend, shortly after Khabib Nurmagomedov submitted Conor McGregor in the UFC 229 main event, a massive brawl broke out between the two fighters’ teams. Nurmagomedov leapt over the side of the Octagon and attacked McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, while McGregor got into it with several of Nurmagomedov’s teammates inside the cage. It was a scene of pure, unbridled chaos that took several minutes to quell. Ever since this incident, the MMA community has been struggling to assign blame. There are some fans that believe that Khabib Nurmagomedov started it all by jumping over the cage and attacking Dillon Danis. There are others, meanwhile, that feel that Conor McGregor deserves the blame because he threw the first clearly visible punch of the skirmish.

Conor McGregor’s long awaited return to the Octagon, which headlined UFC 229 last Saturday night in Las Vegas, didn’t go the way he planned. That, of course, is not the way McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh envisioned the fight going. It’s the third round of the UFC 229 main event showdown between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, and I’m perched on the edge of my bed in Dublin, Ireland, rubbing sleep from my eyes. I shout “Gwan Conor!” at intervals, tense as ‘The Eagle’ and The Notorious’ exchange jabs in the centre of The Octagon. My Mother, who is sixty six years old, presses her hands into a steeple of prayer, cringing when Nurmagomedov shoots for yet another takedown.
