It’s been a banner year for undefeated bantamweight Cody Garbrandt. The 25-year-old kicked off 2016 with a first-round knockout of Augusto Mendes. Next up was another first-round KO, this time over the then undefeated Thomas Almeida. Then, in his most recent bout, Garbrandt delivered a 48-second knockout of gritty Japanese veteran Takeya Mizugaki. If Garbrandt is able to win his next fight, however, it will blow all these other impressive performances out of the water. His next fight is, after all, a championship bout with dominant bantamweight king Dominick Cruz. If Garbrandt caps off 2016 with a knockout of Cruz, he’ll have had one of the finest years imaginable in MMA. In fact, he thinks a defeat of Cruz would be more than enough to earn him 2016’s Fighter of the Year award.

UFC bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz is widely believed to be one of the best fighters in the UFC. The bantamweight champion recently made his triumphant return to the Octagon earlier this year, where he reclaimed the bantamweight championship he never lost inside the Octagon. After reclaiming the championship belt, Cruz stepped into the Octagon to square off with longtime nemesis Urijah Faber in the co-main event of UFC 199 back in June. Cruz put on a spectacular performance as he picked up a dominant unanimous decision win over Faber.

Current number one UFC ranked bantamweight TJ Dillashaw is more than upset over the recently announced bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz and number 6 UFC ranked contender Cody Garbrandt. Dillashaw is looking to rematch Cruz after the two fought a close five-round title fight at UFC Fight Night 81 back in January where Cruz walked away with the belt by judge’s split decision. This hotly-anticipated showdown will serve as the main event of UFC 207, which will occur on December 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Garbrandt, of course, was not the only choice for the next crack at Cruz’s title. It could easily be argued that former champ TJ Dillashaw, Jimmie Rivera, Bryan Caraway or John Lineker deserved the shot instead.

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s latest trip to Portland, Oregon, John Lineker (29-7) scored a split decision win over John Dodson in a very competitive – and very entertaining – encounter. With the win, Lineker is now 4-0 since moving from flyweight to bantamweight, having defeating Francisco Rivera, Rob Font and Michael McDonald before besting Donald. This streak has led the stone-fisted Brazilian to begin campaigning for a title shot against reigning UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

TJ Dillashaw, who surrendered the title to Cruz earlier this year, certainly has a strong case for the title shot. Jimmie Rivera, who recently scored a career-best win over long time contender Urijah Faber, is also in the running. Bryan Caraway, who recently ended the unbeaten streak of Aljamain sterling, is in the conversation. The same can be said of the winner of John Lineker and John Dodson’s looming bantamweight scrap.

Since Cruz defeated Garbrandt’s mentor and coach, Urijah Faber, at UFC 199, the pair have sent verbal jabs back and forth. Following Garbrandt’s UFC 202 win over Takeya Mizugaki, he called out Cruz in his post-fight Octagon interview. With both men verbally agreeing to the fight, Garbrandt once again sent some verbal blows Cruz’ way. This time however, the Tweet was deleted, and later reposted without offensive terms.

The pair’s rivalry has been a very public one, which reached new heights when Cruz defeated Garbrandt’s training partner and mentor, Urijah Faber, in the co-main event of UFC 199. Shortly after the fight, Garbrandt knocked out Thomas Almeida, and called out the champ.
