Last night, reports surfaced suggesting that a long-discussed heavyweight title fight between reigning champ Daniel Cormier and WWE star Brock Lesnar is off the table. The reason, these reports stated, is that the pro wrestling export Lesnar has decided he’s done with mixed martial arts. Heavyweight contender Curtis Blaydes isn’t happy to hear this. There hasn’t been a heavyweight title fight since November of 2018, when Cormier defended his title in a short-notice showdown with Derrick Lewis. Granted, that’s partly due to Cormier’s lingering injuries, but it’s also due the uncertainty surrounding this potential Lesnar vs. Cormier fight. Therein lies the issue for Curtis Blaydes.

Since UFC 226 concluded in July 2018, we all thought that a Brock Lesnar MMA return was inevitable. Well, it seems that plans have changed. According to UFC President Dana White, the WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion is “done, he’s retired,” White told ESPN. “We’re going to move in another direction with [Daniel] Cormier.”

Speaking at the UFC’s Seasonal Press Conference on Friday afternoon, however, UFC President Dana White gave a grim update on this potential Daniel Cormier vs. Brock Lesnar fight.

While nothing is set in stone just yet, it still sounds like UFC heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier could next defend his title against former champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar. Let’s just say Junior dos Santos doesn’t approve of this plan. “This thing where Daniel Cormier wants to fight Brock Lesnar; I know he wants to make money, but it doesn’t make any sense,” Dos Santos told MMA Junkie ahead of his fight with Derrick Lewis. “The only one who wants to see that fight or make that fight is him. Nobody else wants to see that. Of course Brock Lesnar, he’s a very polemic guy so people like to watch him and they pay to watch him, that’s why he wants to fight him. But man, that would be ridiculous to have him back in the sport and have him fighting for the title already.

The light heavyweight champion soundly outfought his lionhearted challenger over five lopsided rounds at UFC 235 on Saturday night, and can now look forward to his next challenge in the Octagon. That being said, it’s not abundantly clear who is next opponent will be. While Thiago Santos — nicknamed “Marreta” — seems to be the frontrunner, the allure of heavyweight fights with Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar are difficult to ignore.

Daniel Cormier was supposed to partake in the final fight of his career before his 40th birthday this March. Well, that is no longer going to happen. Both Cormier and his head coach Javier Mendez have said his retirement will be delayed. Now, the question is, how many fights does Cormier have left, and who will his next opponent be? He definitely has options, whether it’s a fight with Brock Lesnar, a rematch against Stipe Miocic, or a trilogy fight with Jon Jones. But if Mendez has any say in the matter, it probably won’t be a Miocic rematch.

If Jon Jones is able to defeat Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC 235 this weekend — the oddsmakers certainly believe he will — it will open the door to more marquee matchups in the light heavyweight division, and perhaps even the heavyweight division. Arguably the two biggest matchups available for a victorious Jones going forward would be a rematch with his arch rival, heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier, and a showdown with former heavyweight champ and WWE star Brock Lesnar.

He considers this fight a win-win for all parties involved. “Fighting Brock Lesnar is aways appealing,” Jones said on the UFC 232 conference call last week (transcript via MMA Fighting). “That’s a win-win situation. That’s a huge money fight and that’s me fighting a guy who’s a hell of a lot bigger than me and everyone wins in that situation.

With this victory, Dos Santos is once again right in the mix in the heavyweight division. Unfortunately for him, the next shot at Daniel Cormier’s heavyweight title is expected to go former champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar.

UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has already successfully defended his heavyweight title in which he earned in July with a stunning first-round knockout victory over the defending king, Stipe Miocic. It seemed clear after that fight that Cormier’s first heavyweight title defense would come against another former heavyweight champion in the WWE star, Brock Lesnar.
