Anthony Pettis has two opponents in mind if Jose Aldo is retiring

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis was hoping to score a title fight with current interim UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. However, after news broke that Eddie Alvarez would be defending his lightweight strap against current featherweight champion Conor McGregor at November’s highly anticipated UFC 205 in New York, a frustrated Aldo announced that he was done with fighting and requested his release from the UFC.

After defeating Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight championship at UFC 200, Aldo believed he had secured himself a rematch with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who he lost to in just 13 seconds at UFC 194.

Michael “The Menace” Johnson scored a brutal first-round knockout victory over Dustin Poirier in the main event of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 94 event in Hidalgo, Texas. Johnson was able to slip a Poirier combination and then catch “The Diamond” with a big counter right hand, followed by a straight left, which sent Dustin crashing to the canvas.

Last month, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis dropped down to featherweight and scored a career-saving win over Charles Oliveira. Had he lost the fight, he’d have found himself on a dangerous four-fight losing streak – the kind of skid that has ejected many fighters from the UFC in the past. As it turns out, however, Pettis didn’t only save his own career by defeating Oliveira. He also saved the career of his long-time coach Duke Roufus, who joined Ariel Helwani on this week’s episode of The MMA Hour.

The rankings are in following last Saturday’s UFC on FOX card in Vancouver, and things are looking up for two fighter’s whose previous losses had pushed them out of the top 10 in their weight classes. Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis reclaimed his spot as a top 10 fighter after being knocked out of the rankings at lightweight following a three-fight losing streak, going from unranked on the UFC.com’s website to his current position of No. 6 in the featherweight division. Pettis debuted at 145 lb weight class on Saturday night and did the unthinkable by submitting Jiu-Jitsu ace Charles Oliveira with a slick guillotine choke in the third round.

With the UFC featherweight division currently on hold while Conor McGregor decides whether or not to defend his featherweight strap against Jose Aldo, presumptive #1 contender Max Holloway, and #6 ranked Anthony Pettis are doing a bit of matchmaking of their own! Holloway, who is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 199 in June, called out Pettis, who is fresh off a win over Charles Oliveira in his featherweight debut, via Twitter.

The former UFC lightweight champion is coming off three-straight decision losses in the promotions lightweight division and is looking to find new life at 145-pounds. Waiting for Pettis at 145-pounds appears to be the hard-hitting striker known as “Lil Heathen”. Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis has gone through a rough patch in the Octagon. After losing his UFC lightweight championship to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 185, Pettis dropped back to back decisions to Eddie Alvarez and most recently Edson Barboza. Given the 3-fight losing streak, Pettis feels as though it’s time for a change. ‘Showtime’ took to Instagram to reveal that he is still training at the JacksonWinkeljohn MMA Academy in Albuquerque New Mexico, and is in the process of dropping down to featherweight.

Early Tuesday morning it was revealed that UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos had withdrawn from his UFC 196 lightweight title fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor on March 5th. Immediately there was speculation as to who would step in on short notice to fight McGregor and save the main event. While Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, fresh off his win on Saturday, offered to step in to fight McGregor, there is now another option.
