Duke Roufus Says He Would Have Quit Coaching if Anthony Pettis Lost to Charles Oliveira

Last month, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis dropped down to featherweight and scored a career-saving win over Charles Oliveira. Had he lost the fight, he’d have found himself on a dangerous four-fight losing streak – the kind of skid that has ejected many fighters from the UFC in the past. As it turns out, however, Pettis didn’t only save his own career by defeating Oliveira. He also saved the career of his long-time coach Duke Roufus, who joined Ariel Helwani on this week’s episode of The MMA Hour.

The rankings are in following last Saturday’s UFC on FOX card in Vancouver, and things are looking up for two fighter’s whose previous losses had pushed them out of the top 10 in their weight classes. Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis reclaimed his spot as a top 10 fighter after being knocked out of the rankings at lightweight following a three-fight losing streak, going from unranked on the UFC.com’s website to his current position of No. 6 in the featherweight division. Pettis debuted at 145 lb weight class on Saturday night and did the unthinkable by submitting Jiu-Jitsu ace Charles Oliveira with a slick guillotine choke in the third round.

With the UFC featherweight division currently on hold while Conor McGregor decides whether or not to defend his featherweight strap against Jose Aldo, presumptive #1 contender Max Holloway, and #6 ranked Anthony Pettis are doing a bit of matchmaking of their own! Holloway, who is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Ricardo Lamas at UFC 199 in June, called out Pettis, who is fresh off a win over Charles Oliveira in his featherweight debut, via Twitter.

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis returned to the win column at last night’s UFC on FOX 21 event in Vancouver, this after he submitted Charles Oliveira in the third-round of their co-main event bout. The fight with Oliveira served as Pettis’ featherweight debut and the submission victory snapped Anthony’s three-fight losing skid.

Earlier this month, former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis announced his intentions to drop down to featherweight in hopes of ending his 3-fight skid. After losing his UFC lightweight championship to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 185, Pettis dropped back to back decisions to Eddie Alvarez and most recently Edson Barboza. Given the 3-fight losing streak, Pettis feels as though it’s time for a change. ‘Showtime’ took to Instagram to reveal that he is still training at the JacksonWinkeljohn MMA Academy in Albuquerque New Mexico, and is in the process of dropping down to featherweight.
