‘UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos III’ Main Card Play-By-Play & Live Results

Gabriel Gonzaga defeated Shawn Jordan by way of Knockout (Punches) 1:33 of Round 1
Gilbert Melendez defeated Diego Sanchez by way of Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
Daniel Cormier defeated Roy Nelson by way of Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Cain Velasquez defeated Junior dos Santos by way of TKO 3:09 in Round 5


Round 1 – Montague hits a leg kick. Dodson gets popped with a jab. Dodson hits a big right hook. Montague is doing a good job fading away from Dodson’s lunging jabs. The crowd is booing with the lack of action. Dodson hits an overhand right. Dodson lands a leg kick. Montague gets popped with a big straight right! Montague gets right back up but he’s eating a lot of shots. Montague is looking to wrap his leg and take him down but Dodson is not backing off. Montague amazingly makes it back to his feet but is still a bit out of it. Dodson just has to pick his shots; there’s 1:30 left. Montague recovered quickly. Montague lands a knee in the clinch but Dodson hits a left over the top. Dodson pops him with a left straight and Montague flops onto the ground! The referee stops it! Fight is over!

Round 1 – Gonzaga lands the first hard shot of the fight, which was a body shot. Jordan eats a right straight. Gonzaga nails an inside leg kick. Gonzaga nails Jordan with a right hook and Jordan is out! Jordan continues to eat shots and he’s done; fight’s over. Gonzaga wins.

Round 1 – Sanchez looks like he’s about to murder somebody. Sanchez runs to the middle of the octagon and is ready to attack. Melendez goes for a headkick but Sanchez catches it and drags him to the ground. Sanchez has Melendez’s back! Melendez makes it to his feet and scoots Sanchez off. Melendez connects with a few good shots to the body. Melendez hits a quick, light, leg kick. Sanchez pushes Melendez on the cage, but as Sanchez pushes off Melendez connects with a few good shots. Melendez is crisp in his delivery. Sanchez shoots and gets stuffed, Melendez connects with a hook as he gets back up to his feet. It looks like Sanchez may be hurt. Melendez is repeatedly connecting with the jab. Sanchez’s left eye is busted open. Melendez has landed 33 strikes while Sanchez has landed a total of 6. Melendez stuffs another takedown. Melendez eats some serious body shots. They go at it at the end of the first round and Sanchez almost gets dropped, but he pops right back up! 10-9 Melendez.

Round 2 – Sanchez is begging Melendez to bring it. It seems as if Sanchez wants to counterpunch, and Melendez is wise to this as he’s picking smart shots. Melendez connects with a right hook. Sanchez misses a wild hook. Melendez eats a right hand. Sanchez lands a couple body shots and just dodges a Melendez uppercut. They pause the fight to check the cut. His skin is hanging down; it looks brutal. They let the fight go on. Melendez lands a right cross. Sanchez misses a flying knee. Melendez comes out on top after an exchange, landing a right hook as he backs away. Melendez eats a straight, then connects with a right. Sanchez slips after missing a knee but makes it back to his feet. Sanchez eats a kick to the body, then a right hand. Melendez is confident but gets taken down. Melendez gets right back up. Sanchez eats a right hook, flops down but gets right back up. It seems like he just fell because he was tired. Melendez has stuffed five of six takedown attempts. Horn sounds. 10-9 Melendez.

Round 3 – Sanchez’s left eye seems to be completely shut. Despite that, he connects with a solid jab. Melendez is still bouncing on his toes this late in the fight and lands six right hooks in a row! They’re trading shots and the crowd is on their feet! Sanchez knows he’s losing and knows he needs to end this fight and just keeps pressing forward despite eating shots. The left side of Sanchez’s face looks like he’s a zombie. They pause the fight to look at the cut. The blood is pouring to the side and not in his eye so it looks like we will go on. Fight resumes! Sanchez lands a kick to the ribs of Melendez. They’re back to trading shots… this is insane. Sanchez connects with two hooks! Another shot and Melendez is dropped! He has Melendez’s back but blood is everywhere and he’s slipping. Sanchez almost has Melendez locked in a guillotine and Melendez escapes. They’re back to their feet and trading bombs again. This is easily FOTN and probably FOTY. Melendez has Sanchez’s back and, but Sanchez switches and takes Melendez down! They’re back stnding and we have ten seconds left. They trade hooks for ten seconds and horn sounds. Joe Rogan claims this was the best fight he’s ever seen in his life. I wouldn’t agree. 10-9 Sanchez

Gilbert Melendez defeated Diego Sanchez by way of Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)


Round 1 – Nelson is in the middle of the octagon and his right hand is cocked. Cormier ducks under and slams Nelson down to the ground. Cormier transitions to side control and has a cradle. Cormier is landing some big shots to Nelson’s ribs. Nelson makes it back to his feet, but Cormier still has a hold of him. He lands a knee to the skull of Nelson. Nelson is looking for a wrist lock while Cormier is going for a takedown. Cormier is out of danger and shoots for another takedown. Cormier has Nelson pressed against the fence and Nelson’s mouth is agape. Cormier knees Nelson’s big belly. Cormier hits a left hook. Cormier slams his knee to the solarplex of Nelson and it looked brutal. A bit of Cormier’s shin hit Nelson’s cup and the fight is paused. It’s giving him a good chance to recover from fatigue. Cormier throws a high kick but it’s blocked. Cormier connects with multiple shots and Nelson is just smiling. Cormier is dodging everything. Horn sounds and the round is over. 10-9 Cormier.

Round 2 – Both men are playing it smart and picking their shots to open this round up. Cormier almost eats an uppercut, but he just blocked it with his hand. Nelson hits a left hook, but it was soft. Cormier makes Nelson eat two serious right hooks and Nelson is pressed against the cage. Cormier connects with a hook and tries to take Nelson down, but Nelson gets right back up. He may be too heavy for Cormier to simply slam down. He has to adapt his wrestling game. On the flip side, this could be his plan: To simply tire Nelson out. While pressed against the cage, Nelson eats an uppercut. Cormier is utilizing wrist control to prevent Nelson from doing much of anything while in the clinch. Cormier hits a right-left combination and Nelson just eats it. Cormier connects with a thud of a leg kick. Cormier is throwing combos and Nelson is simply blocking instead of throwing counters. Horn sounds. 10-9 Cormier.

Round 3 – Nelson was gasping for air on the stool. Cormier’s breathing was calm. Cormier connects with a good right hand. Nelson hits a body shot, his first significant hit of the round at one minute in. Cormier connects with an outside leg kick. Nelson blocks a lunging right jab. Cormier throws a spinning back kick and then a backfist. Cormier landed a front kick right down the middle. Cormier throws a right hand over the top and connects. Cormier is throwing a lot of kicks. Nelson eats a big right and gets taken down right after, but they roll through and they’re back to their feet. Nelson finally checks a leg kick! Cormier goes low with a kick, then snaps it high. Nelson is asking Cormier to strike, but Nelson isn’t initiating himself. When he does, Cormier easily dodges them. Cormier turns it on at the end of the round and is backing Nelson back into the corner. Horn sounds and the fight is over, folks. 10-9 Cormier.

Daniel Cormier defeated Roy Nelson by way of Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)


Round 1 – JDS popped Cain twice to open the round and Cain shoots right away. JDS almost gets locked into a guillotine but escapes. Cain has JDS pressed agains the cage and is throwing short uppercuts. They break and they’re in the middle of the octagon. Cain presses the action again and pushes JDS against the cage. JDS lands a headkick. Cain keeps trying to take JDS down but finds no success. 20 seconds later, Cain takes JDS down. He’s in JDS’ half guard . Cain is throwing elbows down and transitions to JDS’ back. JDS cage walks up to his feet and eats a knee to the body. Cain presses him against the fence again; it looks like we will find ourselves here multiple times throughout the fight. JDS lands a swift kick to the leg of Cain. Velasquez has landed 56 significant strikes. JDS throws a couple bombs at the end of the round and they miss. 10-9 Velasquez.

Round 2 – Cain lands with a left-right combination and it doesn’t phase JDS. Cain grabs a leg of JDS and takes him down, but JDS pops right back up. JDS’ back is pressed against the fence again; Cain is looking to grind all the energy out of his opponent. Cain separates and throws a couple bombs, JDS eats a couple but displays good head movement and dodges some. Cain grabs a hold of JDS leg, but JDS makes it away and they’re back in the middle of the octagon. Seconds later, JDS is pressed against the cage again. They separate and JDS takes a big breath. JDS is eating a lot of knees to the legs. After getting pressed against the cage again, JDS looks up at the clock. The cage almost falls down. JDS trips Cain down, but Cain gets right back up and pops Cain with a huge hook. JDS eats it. Cain has JDS pressed against the cage again and throws some big knees to the thigh of Cain. Whenever they make it back to the middle of the octagon, JDS is still winging shots and landing some but it’s only a matter of time before his back is against the cage again. JDS lands a couple good shots at the end of the round and the horn sounds. 10-9 Velasquez

Round 3 – Cain pushes forward right off the bat and pushes JDS against the cage. He separates, lands a left straight and goes right back to the clinch against the cage. JDS eats a right hand, and is taking serious damage to his thigh with Cain’s knees. JDS connects with an elbow as he spins off of Cain, then Cain eats a couple more shots as they get back to the middle of the octagon. Cain pushes JDS against the fence again, but they’re back to the middle. JDS connects with a right hand. Cain DROPS JDS with a right and eats a lot more shots. Herb doesn’t stop the fight, though as JDS is covering and trying to make it to his feet! JDS gets back up only to fall against the cage. Cain throws some more shots and tries to lock in another standing guillotine. Herb almost stops it again, but JDS escapes again. That was amazing. Cain throws two more right straights and JDS just eats them. JDS’ hands are down and he’s wobbling back and forth, but Cain just continues to press him against the cage as the round ends. 10-8 Velasquez

Round 4 – JDS throws a right hook but misses. Cain connects with another right hand and presses him against the cage. Cain connects with a flurry of left and rights but JDS doesn’t fall down. If JDS’ back wasn’t against the cage, he’d probably be flat on his back. JDS connects with a short elbow but Cain answers with a right hook of his own that wobbles JDS into the corner. JDS is shooting blood out of his nose and his face is busted up badly. Cain is outstriking JDS 230 to 58. JDS connects with a shot but Cain ducks right back down and presses him against the cage. JDS tries to get back to the middle of the cage and eats a right hand that sends him right back to the fence. Cain backs up and lands with a left jab. JDS counters with a strong uppercut, but Cain goes back to the clinch. JDS is SQUIRTING blood out of his right eyebrow. The fight is paused. They let it go on. JDS is tough. As the fight resumes, he’s swinging for the fences. Cain connects with a left straight and goes right back to the fence. As Cain backs up, JDS connects with a short elbow that sends Cain’s head bobbing back. Cain isn’t phased and presses forward. They’re both landing bombs but the round ends, again, with JDS’ back against the fence. 10-9 Velasquez

Round 5 – They meet in the middle of the octagon and both swing for the fences. JDS gets taken down and attempts a triangle, but finds no success. Cain can’t seem to keep JDS down, but his bread and butter has been pressing him against the fence and picking his shots. He goes right back to that, tries to drag JDS down and fails, then pushes him right back against the fence. JDS eats a right hook. JDS goes for a D’arce and Cain rolls out of it. Meanwhile, JDS falls over and lands right on the top of his skull. JDS is hurt and tired; he doesn’t get back up. Herb Dean waves it off and the fight is over.

Cain Velasquez defeated Junior dos Santos by way of TKO 3:09 in Round 5
