Cris Cyborg issues gracious statement on UFC 232 KO loss to Amanda Nunes

Tom Taylor - December 30, 2018

In the co-main event of UFC 232 on Saturday night, the win-streak of long-time featherweight champion Cris Cyborg came to a skittering halt amid a blizzard of power punches from Amanda Nunes. Nunes had the long-time champion wobbled in seconds, and had her face down on the canvas in less than a minute. It was a shocking and brutal loss for the former champion Cris Cyborg, who had not tasted defeat in well over a decade. That being said, she is handling it with absolutely class and dignity.

Daniel Cormier explains what it will take for him to agree to light heavyweight rematch with Jon Jones

Tom Taylor - December 30, 2018

On Saturday night, in the main event of the stacked UFC 232 card, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones made his anticipated return to the Octagon, where he rematched the toughest adversary of his career so far in Sweden’s Alexander Gustafsson. Though Gustafsson put forth a good fight, Jon Jones once again came out on top, this time with a meteor shower of strikes in the third round (see the finish here). After this impressive stoppage victory, in his post fight interview with long-time UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Jones addressed the much discussed possibility of a third fight with his arch nemesis, former two division champion Daniel Cormier.

While this jaw-dropping upset shocked most members of the MMA community, one former Cyborg opponent claims to have seen it coming: Gina Carano.

In the main event of UFC 232 on Saturday night in LA, former UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and fearsome Swedish contender Alexander Gustafsson finally stepped into the cage for a rematch of their 2013 classic. Just as it was in their first fight, the light heavyweight title was on the line. Throughout the first round, Jon Jones showed off far more striking diversity than he did in his first fight with Gustafsson, landing kicks and punches across all levels, a crackling elbow to the dome, and unfortunately, a knee to the cup. Alexander Gustafsson, however, had answers for every one of the former champion’s many takedown attempts.

On Saturday night, in the co-main event of UFC 232 in Los Angeles — not Las Vegas as originally planned — UFC women’s featherweight champion attempted to defend her belt against reigning women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in one of the biggest fights in the history of women’s mixed martial arts. Pegged as a significant underdog, the bantamweight champion rose to the occasion in unimaginable style and decimated the long-time featherweight champion in the very first round.

The final non-title bout of the UFC 232 main card occurred in the welterweight division, where former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit looked to rebound from a string of losses opposite Michael Chiesa, who was making his debut in the welterweight division after a long run in the lightweight division. Early in this riveting welterweight style matchup, it looked like the surprisingly hulking Michael Chiesa would be able to give Carlos Condit all kinds of problems with his wrestling. As the round wore down, however, Condit was able to threaten with a very tight armbar off his back, and then with a heel hook.

The main card of UFC 232, which went down on Saturday night inside The Forum in the Inglewood, California, was kicked off by a high-stakes featherweight showdown between three-time title challenger Chad Mendes, and surging Australian contender Alexander Volkanovski. The pair collided in hopes of establishing themselves as one of the next men in line for UFC featherweight king Max Holloway. To remind, this was a fight Volkanovski actually asked for after defeating Darren Elkins at UFC Boise earlier this year. It was an action-packed scrap while it lasted.

On Saturday night, on the undercard of UFC 232 at the Forum in Inglewood, California, former UFC bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano moved up to the featherweight division for a showdown with former Invicta champion Megan Anderson. The two women collided in hopes of earning a shot at the winner of the UFC 232 main event, which pitted divisional champion Cris Cyborg against bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes. In the end, this fight ended rather strangely — and perhaps disastrously for Cat Zingano.

On the undercard of UFC 232, long-time UFC middleweight contender Uriah Hall was tasked with welcoming ferocious middleweight prospect Bevon Lewis to the Octagon. This fight did not begin well for Uriah Hall. In fact, the Ultimate Fighter veteran was probably down two rounds heading into the third. Thanks to a blistering, third-round punch, however, it didn’t matter.
