Alexander Gustafsson is considering a move to heavyweight following UFC 232

By Tom Taylor - January 2, 2019

Alexander Gustafsson hoped to cap of 2018 by toppling the seemingly unbeatable Jon Jones and capturing the UFC light heavyweight title. Regrettably, things did not go as planned for the fearsome Swede, as he wilted amid a storm of third-round ground-strikes from his foe.

In the wake of this tough loss to Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson is now considering a move to the perilous UFC heavyweight division for a fresh start.

Gustafsson discusses this possibility at the UFC 232 post-fight press conference.

“Yeah, of course,” Gustafsson said when asked about potentially heading north to test his mettle in the heavyweight division (via MMAjunkie). “The heavyweight division is also an alternative. I’m here to fight, either if it’s at light heavy or heavy. I have to talk to my coaches and see what’s next.”

Whatever the case, Gustafsson assures he has not yet reached the end of the road. He says he’ll continue fighting for now, and that he’ll stop when he no longer finds the experience fun.

“Let’s see what’s next,” he said. “Like always, you do this for a reason, and it’s to compete with the best guys out there, and that’s what I’ll do. I will do it as long as I think it’s fun.

“It meant everything to me [to beat Jones],” he added. “This is not football or tennis we’re practicing – it’s pure fighting, and every fight is life-changing for you. It’s a big setback for me losing to Jon again, but at the end of the day, it’s a sport, and we do this because we love it.”

What do you think the future holds for Alexander Gustafsson after UFC 232? Would you be interested in seeing him fight at heavyweight?
