Friday night in Las Vegas, former WSOF champion Justin Gaethje made his triumphant UFC debut as he knocked out Michael Johnson in the second round of their main event scrap of the TUF 25 Finale. Following the thrilling win, many immediately began to speculate as to who Gaethje should fight next, he spoke at the post-fight press conference where he reveled that he is targeting top ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson, in an effort to fast-track to the interim UFC lightweight championship.

Originally, Tony Ferguson was expected to battle Khabib Nurmagomedov for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209. When Nurmagomedov was hospitalized after a tough weight cut, however, the fighters were deprived of the chance to settle their score. While Nurmagomedov’s weight troubles have only helped to solidify Ferguson’s claim to the lightweight number-one-contender spot, Ferguson still plans to fight his rival in the near future.

Last night, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 112, Kevin Lee scored an impressive – if controversial – submission win over Michael Chiesa. Shortly after this win, which is likely to send him careening into the UFC lightweight top-10, Lee joined a panel of Karyn Bryant, Kenny Florian, Tyron Woodley and Tony Ferguson on Fox Sports 1 to discuss the fight. It did not take long for Lee and Ferguson – who stands out as the top lightweight not named Conor McGregor – to start going at it.

Streaking UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson has made no secret of his disdain for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. The American has repeatedly blasted the champ for failing to defend the title he won from Eddie Alvarez in November of 2016. Now that McGregor’s much-discussed boxing showdown with undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather is official, however, Ferguson has decided to offer up some props. In a recent interview with MMAJunkie.com, Ferguson congratulated McGregor on making this unprecedented battle with Mayweather happen, saying he’s happy to fight for an interim lightweight title while the champ makes his fortune.

Back in early March, streaking lightweight contender Tony Ferguson was expected to battle Khabib Nurmagomedov for interim lightweight gold. Unfortunately, Nurmagomedov was forced out of this fight just hours out from the scheduled time of battle. When Nurmagomedov withdrew from the fight, and Ferguson was left without an opponent, an opportunistic Michael Johnson stepped up and offered to fight Ferguson on just hours notice, giving him the opportunity to avenge a 2012 loss. For Ferguson, however, this was not the right choice. The top-ranked lightweight elected not to risk his contendership status in a last minute battle with an opponent that could not be more different from the one he had been training for, and was subsequently removed from the card.

Tony Ferguson is campaigning hard for a fight with Nate Diaz. Ferguson took an opportunity on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour to go on a verbal onslaught targeting Diaz. With all of the comments that “El Cucuy” is throwing at the Stockton scrapper, it wouldn’t be a surprise if there is some sort of incident between the two that takes place outside of the Octagon if they ever cross paths, as Diaz is no stranger to that.

With Nurmagomedov out, “El Cucuy” is still looking to solidify himself as the top UFC lightweight as the champion of the division, Conor McGregor is concentrating on getting himself a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. Earlier this month, Ferguson said on The MMA Hour that he was interested in a fight with Nate Diaz out of all the lightweight contenders and pushed on the matchup speaking on the 5ive Rounds podcast recently. Currently ranked #2 by the UFC in the lightweight division, “El Cucuy” said that he is actually doing Diaz a favor with trying to arrange the matchup as the Stockton scrapper is sitting further down the ranks at #8.

UFC lightweight veteran Edson Barboza has been on a bit of a tear recently. After being submitted by streaking contender Tony Ferguson in 2015, Barboza bounced back by rattling off three straight wins over top ranked opponents. To kick off 2016, Barboza stepped into the Octagon with former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis for a pivotal showdown at UFC 197. Barboza proved that he was more than capable of hanging with the best of the best at lightweight as he picked up a unanimous decision win over ‘Showtime’. In his very next fight, Barboza stepped into the Octagon with Gilbert Melendez for another pivotal showdown. Once again, Barboza picked up an impressive unanimous decision win, cementing his place at the top of the lightweight division.

Top ranked UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson recently found himself without a fight when his UFC 208 opponent, Khabib Nurmagomedov, was forced out of their co-main event interim lightweight title fight the day before they were set to throw down. Following Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal from the fight, Ferguson was left without an opponent after he & the UFC were able to reach an agreement over a fill-in opponent on 24 hours notice.

Last November, in the main event of the blockbuster UFC 205, Ireland’s Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title. With this win, the already sought-after superstar became the target of the lightweight division’s top contenders – namely Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Regrettably for fighters like Nurmagomedov and Ferguson, McGregor quickly sniffed out the next most lucrative possibility for his career – and it doesn’t involve an immediate defense of his lightweight title. Instead, the Irishman has become transfixed on the possibility of a boxing mega-fight with recently un-retired star Floyd Mayweather, and with Mayweather interested too, there seems to be a real possibility that this fight happens.
