Of all the fights he’s booked however, Shelby says one stands out as his proudest accomplishment – and his pick may surprise you. In a recent interview with SquareMile.com, The UFC matchmaker explained that his crowning achievement was a December 2013 rematch between then women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey, and the recently retired Miesha Tate.

Scoring lightning fast submission wins and thudding knockout wins over game opponents, she looked more and more like an unbeatable champion which each consecutive defense of her women’s bantamweight title. During her reign of dominance, UFC commentator Joe Rogan was one of her biggest advocates, frequently praising her skill, and even suggesting that she could defeat many of the UFC’s male bantamweights.

In the wake of former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey being knocked out by Amanda Nunes in the very first round of their UFC 207 scrap back in the end of 2016, there has been much speculation as to whether or not former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will return to the Octagon for another attempt at reclaiming the women’s bantamweight championship. Recently however, UFC President Dana White revealed that Rousey likely wouldn’t be returning to the Octagon for another fight, and would look to explore other career opportunities, including her film career.

Back in November of 2015, in the main of UFC 193, Holly Holm shocked the world by knocking out seemingly unbeatable women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey with a second-round head kick. Her victory was emphatic enough that it kept Rousey out of action for more than a year. Eventually, of course, Rousey made her long awaited return to the cage. She made this return in the main event of UFC 207, when she took on reigning women’s bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes. Regrettably for Rousey and her legions of fans, however, this comeback fight with Nunes would go even worse than her fight with Holm did, as she was mauled to a TKO in just 48 seconds.

In the UFC’s final card of the year, UFC 207, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes stepped into the Octagon for the first time with hopes of defending her belt for the first time since winning it at UFC 200 in July, where she defeated Miesha Tate. Nunes of course picked up a phenomenal 48 second win as she knocked out Ronda Rousey in the very first round. In several interviews following the fight, including her post-fight Octagon interview, Nunes bashed Rousey for being overrated and not being as dominant as she was perceived to be.

While Conor McGregor may have had a pay-per view interview this past weekend to discuss his future plans in the Octagon, talks ultimately shifted to Ronda Rousey. Leading up to UFC 207, where Ronda Rousey made her highly anticipated return to the Octagon following the first defeat of her professional career at the hands of Holly Holm in October of 2015, the former champ was granted permission from the UFC to skip out on her media obligations and focus solely on training. This didn’t go over too well with many fight fans, who criticized the UFC for allowing Rousey to skip out on her media obligations, when UFC champion Conor McGregor was pulled from his UFC 200 fight with Nate Diaz just months prior due to refusing to fulfill his media obligations.

Since suffering the second straight defeat of her professional career, several members of the MMA community have continued to offer Ronda Rousey support. There were many questions regarding how Ronda Rousey‘s striking would look leading up to the fight after having taken a year off following her UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm in November of 2015, however when Rousey stepped into the Octagon with Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, it didn’t take long for Nunes to expose Rousey’s underdeveloped striking game.

After suffering the first defeat of her career at the hands of Holly Holm in November of 2015, Rousey took over a year away from the Octagon to recover from several lingering injuries, while taking some time to film several movies in Hollywood. Leading up to her return fight with Nunes at UFC 207, there were many questions regarding whether the former champ would return to the Octagon with an improved standup game. That, coupled with Rousey’s media blackout leading up to the fight not only drew the former champ some criticism, but also left fight fans unsure of Rousey’s mind state leading up to the fight.

It didn’t take long for the former champ to break her silence as she revealed that she would be taking some time to process the loss before she made any decisions about her future in the sport.
