Alexander Gustafsson announces retirement following loss to Anthony Smith

Former UFC title challenger Alexander Gustafsson has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts following his loss to Anthony Smith at UFC Stockholm. The 32-year-old, Gustafsson (18-6 MMA) suffered a fourth round submission loss to Smith in today’s headliner (watch that here).

Two-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Johnson is retired from MMA competition… but the overall combat sports hiatus is about to end. Submission Underground Grappling (SUG) announced on Friday that their ninth event is set to go down on July 7 live as usual from the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon. Despite SUG Founder Chael Sonnen announcing during the last event that SUG 9 will take place in Las Vegas, that obviously didn’t end up working out.

From the sounds of it, former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre could be the next mixed martial arts star to make the jump to pro wrestling — although perhaps only on a one-off basis. St-Pierre claims WWE approached him at the ESPN awards, and that he directed them to contact his management. Based on his comments, it seems like some kind of deal could potentially be reached with the pro wrestling institution, although the Canadian legend clarified that he is not interested in a full-time wrestling career.

Colby Covington hasn’t fought since UFC 225 back in June of 2018. Since then, he has had nasal surgery and a fairly public dispute with Dana White and the UFC — both of which have slowed down his return. Having been on the bench for close to a year, Covington isn’t happy with what he has seen. He believes UFC fans have been robbed, as the promotion’s champions aren’t fighting regularly. But he assures that once he becomes champion, he will fight anyone the UFC offers.

Probably,” Edgar told MMAjunkie. “It’s probably what’s best for his body, but I don’t really know what’s going on in his head. All fighters scheduled for UFC Stockholm have made weight. The card is scheduled for tomorrow in Stockholm, Sweden and is headlined by Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson (18-5) vs Anthony Smith (31-14). Gustafsson was the first to be weighed and came in at 205 pounds. The former middleweight Smith hit the scales at 206 but made weight comfortably as he was still wearing shorts and socks. Both fighters are coming off a loss to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and will be looking to get back on track.
