Nate Diaz gets reduced penalty for UFC 202 bottle-throwing incident

Back in March of 2016, Nate Diaz shocked the world by tapping out the seemingly unbeatable Conor McGregor. Several months later, in the main event of August’s UFC 202, McGregor and Diaz went at it again. Unsurprisingly, the buildup to this anticipated rematch was highlighted by plenty of memorable trash talk and confrontations. The crescendo of the pair’s pre-fight beef was there infamous press conference bottle fight, during which they pelted one another with water bottles, energy drink cans, coffee cups, and various other drinking vessels turned projectiles.

If things had gone Tony Ferguson’s way, he would have fought – and with a little luck, defeated – Khabib Nurmagomedov to win the UFC interim lightweight title at March’s UFC 209. Following Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal from the fight, Ferguson was left without an opponent after he & the UFC were able to reach an agreement over a fill-in opponent on 24 hours notice.

In a recent interview with TMZ, UFC President Dana White said that the UFC has attempted to correct Diaz’s long absence from the cage by making him several fight offers, but that he has turned them all down. The UFC boss then suggested that this is because Diaz is holding out for a third fight with McGregor.

Now more than a week removed from this disappointing twist, Ferguson has shifted his gaze to the future, and he’s not sure Nurmagomedov is part of that future for him. While there has been widespread discussion about rescheduling this Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov bout, Ferguson is instead interested in a fight with fan favorite Nate Diaz.
