Although the UFC has yet to set an official date or event, Georges St-Pierre is scheduled to return to the Octagon after taking years off from competing in the UFC. The former UFC welterweight kingpin will be making his return going up a weight class to challenge UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Here we see a shirtless St-Pierre in the gym alongside Tristar teammate Yukinori Akazawa. St-Pierre has never competed in the UFC middleweight division but is looking to challenge the champion in Michael Bisping and make history by becoming the fourth fighter in UFC history to win two titles in two different UFC weight classes.

Last weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 210, Chris Weidman lost to Gegard Mousasi by second-round TKO. The circumstances of this TKO, however, were quite controversial. It began with Mousasi landing what appeared to be two illegal knees. From there, the action was stopped, as a swarm of confused officials and referees milled about the Octagon trying to decide how to proceed, while a dazed Weidman attempted to regroup. Ultimately, the knees were deemed legal, and the fight was waved off by referee Dan Miragliotta, much to the outrage of Weidman and his camp. Hence the TKO win for Mousasi.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is currently waiting in limbo to find out if former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will comply with his terms for their targeted fight. While the UFC announced that the fight would go down in 2017, Bisping recently informed St-Pierre that he will not wait until the former champ is ready to fight. Instead, Bisping informed St-Pierre that unless he is willing to fight in July, The Count will give the middleweight title shot to Yoel Romero. Now, in an editorial piece for Champions.co, Michael Bisping revealed that he wants to fight light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, however he knows that realistically the fight will never materialize:

Early in 2017, news surfaced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon to fight middleweight champion Michael Bisping. UFC President Dana White confirmed the news, and both Bisping and St-Pierre appeared at a press conference for the scrap. With that being said, there was no date given for the bout, leading many to wonder when it would take place. Apparently Michael Bisping felt the same way, because the champ released a statement in which he threatened to take St-Pierre’s title shot back and give it to middleweight #1 contender Yoel Romero.

While the fight was already officially announced by the UFC, and the pair have already done a press conference for the fight, no official date has been set. That hasn’t rubbed the middleweight champ very well, and he has threatened to take St-Pierre’s title fight away and give it to Yoel Romero, who was promised the next middleweight title fight before St-Pierre returned to the Octagon.

While this fight has got some members of the MMA community very excited, it’s generated criticism from others for the way it deprives the top middleweight contenders of the title shots they deserve. During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold offered his own criticism of this booking, suggesting that it could set a dangerous precedent, as legitimate ranking-driven matchmaking gives way to a focus on so-called “money fights”.

Earlier this month, MMA legend Vitor Belfort was mauled by a younger, faster, Kelvin Gastelum. Many fans took this beatdown as a sign that it was time for the aging legend to retire. Belfort himself, however, said he had one more in him. In his post-fight interview, he said he’d like to fulfil the last fight on his contract, ideally at UFC 112 in Rio de Janeiro in June. The news that the next crack at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title will go to returning welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre – who has never fought at middleweight before – was most troubling for two men in particular: Yoel Romero and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. With Octagon records of 8-0 and 7-1 respectively, Romero and Jacare are far and away the top contenders in the UFC middleweight division, and are both very much deserving of the opportunity to fight for gold. Interestingly enough, White also stated prior to the Bisping vs. St-Pierre booking that Yoel Romero would be the next contender to the middleweight title. Now, with Romero left waiting to potentially fight the winner of Bisping vs. St-Pierre, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman believes that the fight is holding up the division.
