This Saturday, undefeated lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov will step into the Octagon against streaking lightweight contender Tony Ferguson in a highly anticipated showdown for the interim UFC lightweight title in the co-main event of a stacked card. In addition to the pair finally stepping into the Octagon together after having the fight fall through on several occasions, the fight will determine which man will fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor when he chooses to return to the Octagon following the birth of his firstborn son in May.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father believes his son will retire from the sport of mixed martial arts sometime next year. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s father and longtime coach, spoke to Russian tabloid Life.ru at Ramzan Kadyrov’s WFCA 34 event in Moscow where he revealed the following (via Bloody Elbow):

In less than one week’s time, the UFC will return to glimmering Las Vegas, Nevada with the stacked UFC 209. This anticipated pay-per-view card will be headlined by a welterweight title rematch between champion Tyron Woodley and challenger Stephen Thompson, who fought to a frequently debated draw back in November. The co-main event, meanwhile, will see undefeated Dagestani star Khabib Nurmagomedov take on the streaking Tony Ferguson in an interim lightweight title fight, which will keep the division moving while undisputed champ Conor McGregor takes some time off to father his first child. Without a crystal ball, it’s impossible to say how either of these two anticipated title fights will unfold. Both battles seem very capable of going either way. While there’s no way of knowing the outcome of these fights till fight night, however, the betting odds do give us a clear picture of the favorites.

Late last year, news broke that UFC head honchos Dana White and Ari Emmanuel visited Moscow, Russia to begin working on the promotion’s potential debut in the country. At the moment, of course, this debut remains a hypothetical one, as no date or location has been confirmed. If the UFC does touch down in Russia, however, it’s likely to be a huge event, as the country is a hotbed for MMA fans, and one of the last markets the UFC has not yet tapped.

UFC lightweight, Tony Ferguson (22-3), will be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209 on March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The two top contenders were initially suppose to meet December 2015. However, Nurmagomedov pulled out due to injury, and the fight was rescheduled for April 2016 until Ferguson withdrew due to injury, also.

After Conor McGregor captured the lightweight championship by knocking out Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York in November, the UFC superstar revealed that he would be taking some time away from the Octagon in order to be with his girlfriend leading up to the birth of their firstborn child in May.
