Late last year, news broke that UFC head honchos Dana White and Ari Emmanuel visited Moscow, Russia to begin working on the promotion’s potential debut in the country. At the moment, of course, this debut remains a hypothetical one, as no date or location has been confirmed. If the UFC does touch down in Russia, however, it’s likely to be a huge event, as the country is a hotbed for MMA fans, and one of the last markets the UFC has not yet tapped.

UFC lightweight, Tony Ferguson (22-3), will be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0) for the interim lightweight title at UFC 209 on March 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The two top contenders were initially suppose to meet December 2015. However, Nurmagomedov pulled out due to injury, and the fight was rescheduled for April 2016 until Ferguson withdrew due to injury, also.

That fight will serve as the co-main event on the card behind a welterweight rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, who will be fighting for Woodley’s welterweight strap.

While Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson will meet in the Octagon at UFC 209 to fight for the interim UFC lightweight championship, it took quite a bit of time for the fight to be made official. After Conor McGregor captured the lightweight championship by knocking out Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in New York in November, the UFC superstar revealed that he would be taking some time away from the Octagon in order to be with his girlfriend leading up to the birth of their firstborn child in May. This led to talks of an interim lightweight title, with undefeated Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov and streaking 10th Planet JiuJitsu lightweight Tony Ferguson being mentioned as the two combatants.
