Donald Cerrone vs. Patrick Cote targeted for UFC Fight Night 89

Donald Cerrone had a successful debut at Welterweight about a month ago and hopes to continue at UFC Fight Night 89. The UFC should be announcing this fight very soon. It looks like Cerrone will be facing Canadian star Patrick Cote in Ottawa Ontario, Canada June 18. The pair will co-headline the event and is expected to air on FoxSports 1 and stream on UFC Fight Pass.

While former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since he defeated Johny Hendricks via split decision at UFC 167 two and a half years ago, talks of GSP returning have remained consistent. Leading up to UFC 196 this past Saturday, MMA fans wondered if GSP could return for a superfight at UFC 200 with Conor McGregor, if he were to defeat Nate Diaz in the main event. Ultimately, as everyone knows by now, Diaz submitted McGregor in the 2nd round of their welterweight scrap.

Yesterday after Rafael dos Anjos withdrew from his UFC 196 title fight against Conor McGregor, many top ranked fighters were scrambling to get the vacant spot opposite McGregor. For a while it seemed as though fan-favorite fighter Donald Cowboy Cerrone would get the fight. Cerrone hit the gym to start cutting weight and was just waiting on the official call from the UFC.

The search for an opponent for Conor McGregor at UFC 196 is still underway. Since Rafael dos Anjos withdrew from their UFC 196 lightweight title fight on March 5th, there has been much speculation as to who will fill-in on short notice to fight McGregor.

Early Tuesday morning it was revealed that UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos had pulled out of his UFC 196 main event scrap against Conor McGregor. With the news of dos Anjos withdrawing from the fight there was much speculation as to who would offer to step in on short notice to save the main event. Many expected Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone to step in and take the fight given his ‘anyone, anytime, anywhere’ mentality in addition to the fact that he just fought on Sunday night.
