When Colby Covington defeated Rafael dos Anjos to win the interim welterweight title in June of 2018, he was promised a shot at undisputed champion Tyron Woodley. Unfortunately, after months of tense negotiations, the UFC decided to award the next shot at Woodley to Kamaru Usman. The pair will fight at UFC 235 this Saturday night in Las Vegas. Colby Covington made sure he was in town for the event, and living up to his nickname, he’s been causing chaos ever since he arrived.

The UFC boss had nothing but good things to say about the Cameroonian-French knockout artist. Then, Francis Ngannou lost back to back decisions to then UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic and fellow contender Derrick Lewis, and White changed his tune. Instead of praising Ngannou, he began to publicly deride him.

UFC President Dana White has previously been very open to the idea of a lightweight showdown between fan favorites Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone. “I’d like to see Conor fight this Summer, those two want to fight each other; they’ve both earned it,” White told MMAjunkie following the UFC 234 pre-fight press conference in Australia. “Cowboy’s fought anybody we’ve ever put against him. We throw this young killer Hernandez at him, Cowboy’s the underdog and he goes in and does it the way he did it, then Conor’s fought everybody. If these two want to fight, I’m down.”

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s first-ever card on ESPN, former UFC heavyweight title challenger Francis Ngannou picked up arguably the biggest victory of his career, deflating the returning Cain Velasquez in less than 30 seconds. Post fight, the victorious Francis Ngannou called for a heavyweight title shot opposite reigning champion Daniel Cormier.

Back in January, UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov was finally disciplined for his role in the wild brawl that followed his UFC 229 victory over Conor McGregor. The Dagestani champion received a $500,000 fine and a nine-month suspension, which can be reduced to six months if he completes an anti-bullying PSA approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Nurmagomedov will not be partaking in the NSAC’s proposed PSA — he recently made his thoughts on that quite clear. Furthermore, the champ actually plans to sit out until November, standing in solidarity with his teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who were suspended for one year for their roles in the brawl.

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has recently expressed interest in a fight with former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Though Conor McGregor would be the much smaller man in the cage in this prospective showdown, he seems up for the matchup too — even calling it an ‘honor.’ Anderson is one crafty, crafty Martial Artist. UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker was expected to defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC 234 in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday night. In a devastating, fight-day twist of fate, however, Whittaker was forced out of this matchup with a hernia, and rushed into surgery on the very evening he was supposed to compete. Given that the middleweight champion has not fought since his June 2018 defeat of Yoel Romero — a win that technically didn’t register as a title defense because Romero missed weight — some members of the MMA community have wondered if he might be stripped of his title.

Speaking on ESPN’s Now or Never earlier this week, UFC President Dana White stated that the time for a rematch between UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier is ‘now.’ “Now,” White said bluntly of a rematch between the two arch rivals. “Yeah. I think that right now, Cormier probably has three fights left in his career, you know what I mean? And one of those guys is definitely going to be Jon Jones.”
