UFC boss Dana White has explained why he was surprised that Paddy Pimblett didn’t change his strategy during the UFC 324 main event.

Last night at UFC 324, Paddy Pimblett fell short in his attempt to become the new UFC interim lightweight champion. He certainly showed a great deal of resilience, but ultimately, it didn’t matter as Justin Gaethje was able to get the better of him, sealing a unanimous decision win to claim the interim belt for the second time.

Many were quite surprised to see Pimblett’s strategy. Instead of using his wrestling and attempting to pursue submissions, he instead opted for a stand and bang operation. Given that Gaethje is one of the heaviest hitters in the history of the lightweight division, you certainly have to wonder why he was so confident in being able to get him out of there with his striking.

In the post-fight press conference, Dana White had the following to say about how Pimblett approached the contest.

White’s view on Pimblett’s game plan

“I don’t think that his game plan was the greatest,” said White.

“Tonight, he showed he is tough and durable against a guy like Gaethje. If you can eat those punches from him… You know, it’s one thing to say, ‘I know I believe in my durability, in my chin, in my ability to go toe-to-toe with this guy’.

“But when it starts to not work, at some point you have to say, ‘It’s the third round, I have two rounds left, I should probably try to take him down’.”
