Cory Sandhagen casts doubts on future fight with Sean O’Malley: ‘Not sure how interested he really is’

Cory Sandhagen isn’t sure if he will ever fight Sean O’Malley.

Sandhagen vs. O’Malley is a fight that many fans want to see. However, how realistic it is to happen is uncertain, as O’Malley is set to face Yadong Song at UFC 324 on Saturday. Should O’Malley win, he’d be right back in the title picture, meaning a Sandhagen fight is even further from happening.

However, Sandhagen said that it is a fight he wants and admits that if he never fights O’Malley, it won’t be because of him.

“I’d say we’re pretty close to the peaks of our careers, if not right in the middle of them, I don’t know why we wouldn’t fight,” Sandhagen said to Ariel Helwani. “I’ve noticed he doesn’t say much about me that could be too controversial. I don’t know how interested he really is in a fight with me. If (the O’Malley) fight doesn’t happen, I promise you it’ll be because O’Malley didn’t want to fight me, not the other way around.”

A fight between Sean O’Malley and Cory Sandhagen would be a fan-friendly fight and one that many fans want to see. Yet, Sandhagen isn’t sure O’Malley is interested in it, which is why he’s uncertain if it will ever happen.

Sandhagen, however, will be paying close attention to Saturday’s fight between O’Malley and Song. He believes it’s a fun fight, but Sandhagen does expect ‘Suga’ to get his hand raised.

“I have O’Malley winning that one,” Sandhagen added. “Song’s biggest problem is that he lunges and leaps into his bigger shots. Unless you mess up against Song and get too close, which O’Malley just doesn’t really do. Song has a really hard time reaching people. With O’Malley’s build and style, it’s going to be a really, really tough fight for Song. Unless Song wrestles and makes it a little dirty. But he’s kind of not that guy either.”

As for Cory Sandhagen, he’s 18-6 as a pro and hasn’t fought since October when he dropped a decision to Merab Dvalishvili for the belt.
