Garry Tonon fires back at Colby Covington, challenges him to grappling match

By Tom Taylor - June 15, 2018

On the latest episode of the MMA Roasted podcast, UFC interim welterweight champion Colby Covington got talking about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace turned ONE Championship star Garry Tonon. It should come as no surprise that Covington claimed he could easily defeat Tonon in a grappling match.

It did not take long for Tonon to respond to this comment from Covington, and he seems more than happy to let the UFC champ try to prove it.

In a Tuesday post to Instagram, Tonon called Covington out for a grappling match — with one condition.

“Yesterday on MMA roasted [Colby Covington] said he could beat me in a grappling match,” Tonon said. “Let’s see it happen, I only have one condition, Colby’s mama has to be there to wipe up the drool after ya boy gets SLEPT!”

Colby Covington’s most recent bout occurred last Saturday night, when he defeated former UFC lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos by decision, capturing the UFC interim welterweight title as a result. Now 14-1 overall, Covington is expected to unify his title with that of UFC undisputed welterweight champ Tyron Woodley in the near future.

Garry Tonon, meanwhile, recently made his MMA debut after an extremely successful career on the professional grappling circuit. This debut, which occurred in the cage of Singapore’s ONE Championship, saw him take on Richard Corminal, and remarkably, win by TKO, rather than with his world-class BJJ.
