Colby Covington has confirmed that the UFC is working on his proposed title fight with Leon Edwards for this summer.

‘Chaos’ has been out of action since he beat long-term rival Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision at UFC 272. The 35 year old was subsequently involved in an alleged assault at the hands of Gamebred.

Colby Covington has challenged Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title on twice but came up short on both occasions. There’s now a new sheriff in town with Leon Edwards finishing ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ to take the strap at UFC 278 before defending it with a unanimous decision win against the same opponent six months later.

Edwards has been reluctant to give Colby Covington the next title shot since the American lost two of his last four bouts. However, the former interim champ remains ranked at #2 in the division and says the UFC is going ahead with the match-up.

Speaking in an interview with InsideFighting, he said,

“I couldn’t say that it’s in July, it could be August. But Dana [White] is getting it 100% done, and we will fight for the undisputed welterweight title fight next. Leon has got nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. We’re gonna get it done for America.”

Colby Covington then went on to add,

“I’m fighting for the undisputed world title next fight. Whether Leon’s there, I will fight for the title.”

The former ATT man was asked why he deserves a crack at the title, to which he replied,

“Look at my resume man. All my last fights – they’re not just contenders. I’ve been beating first bout Hall-of-Famers. Five world champions I beat in my last fights. I’ve been headlining pay-per-views, selling fights. Nobody wants to see anybody more in the division than they want to see me fight so Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington IS the welterweight division, and I can’t wait to get my undisputed title this summer!”

It has been suggested that if Edwards refuses to accept the fight with Colby Covington then he would be forced to vacate the title.

Do you think this fight will go ahead in the summer?
