Chael Sonnen confident Fedor Emelianenko will sign with the UFC

Earlier this month, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko returned to the cage once again. Emelianenko fought former UFC heavyweight Fabio Maldonado in Russia in what turned out to be an extremely back and forth fight. After being rocked in the first round, and nearly finished, Emelianenko managed to win the next 2 rounds en route to a majority decision win.

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen was a recent guest on The MMA Hour where he told Ariel Helwani that he personally saved ‘TUF Brazil 3’ by showing opposing coach Wanderlei Silva his bank account. “The Axe Murderer” denied Sonnen’s recent claims in a video posted to Facebook, where he credited his coach Rafael Cordeiro as being the individual who convinced him to return to the TUF gym. It wasn’t too long ago that former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman withdrew from his UFC 199 rematch with Luke Rockhold for the middleweight title. Immediately there was a debate as to whether Jacare Souza or Michael Bisping would get to step in on short notice and fight Luke Rockhold. Unfortunately for Jacare, he would need to undergo knee surgery, making him unable to accept the fight. Ultimately, Bisping agreed to the fight, and will now fight Rockhold next Saturday.

While Chael Sonnen has continually shut down rumors of a return to MMA in July once his suspension is up, that hasn’t stopped the former title challenger from weighing in on the current state of the UFC’s middleweight division. Sonnen spoke on a recent episode of The MMA Hour, where he said the current UFC middleweights are “just terrible.” Sonnen followed that up by contemplating his return to MMA:

While Chael Sonnen has remained adamant in regards to his retirement from the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, many believe that Sonnen will return to the Octagon once his suspension is up in July of 2016. Given when his suspension will be up, many believe that Sonnen could be making his return to MMA at UFC 200 on July 9th. Chael Sonnen’s suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission will be up in July as his two-year ban from competition comes to an end. While Sonnen told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s MMA Hour that he does not have any current plans of returning to MMA, he did give Helwani a list of opponents that he would still love to fight.

McGregor, who was tied for the most tested athlete by USADA in 2015, immediately stood up from his seat and turned to Diaz to refute the claims with quite a bit of anger.

Also on the card, Roy Jones Jr. will box a fan, Kurt Angle will have a wrestling match with Rey Mysterio Jr., and at one point Dan Severn and Tank Abbott were even slated to have an MMA fight.

While Chael Sonnen hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since his TKO loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 167 in November of 2013, there has been much speculation as to whether or not Sonnen would return to the Octagon once his 2-year suspension is up. With UFC 200 rapidly approaching, many guessed that Sonnen would make an emphatic return to the Octagon at UFC 200, however Sonnen has stated that he is in fact retired, and won’t be returning.

While many believed that Sonnen would return when his suspension was up on July 23rd of 2016, he has stated that he is retired, and will not return.

The event, which is scheduled for March 20th according to MMAWeekly will feature a grappling match between Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping, a MMA fight between Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn, a pro-wrestling match between Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio, and a boxing match between Roy Jones Jr. and a fan who has yet to be selected.
