Brendan Allen rips Dricus Du Plessis for taking ‘easier’ fights after Kamaru Usman win: ‘I was told we were set’

Brendan Allen believes Dricus Du Plessis is ducking him.

Allen has been calling out Du Plessis for quite some time, and the American claims he was told the fight was set. However, the former champ opted to face Kamaru Usman at UFC Oklahoma City instead, which is frustrating for Allen.

“For sure, and I’ve never said that about anybody,” Allen said on JAXXON podcast on Du Plessis ducking him (via MMAJunkie). “I’ve got over 40 fights, never said that about anyone – never. I hate that term, too. We were supposed to be good to go January. I was told we were set, we were done, good to go.

“I was told that all the way up till middle-end of February, and then everything started getting rocky. Next thing you know, it came out that Usman and him were fighting. It’s like he said yes to me, but he took – to me, it’s the easier fight. Kamaru’s older, he’s beat down, he’s coming up a weight class, he’s not as hungry.”

Allen is hopeful that after Dricus Du Plessis beat Kamaru Usman, the two can fight now. The American has been trying to land the fight for years and believes it makes the most sense now as a title eliminator bout.

“That is not the same guy we used to see. You’ve got Dricus who’s sitting over here like, ‘I just beat Kamaru Usman. I beat (Israel Adesanya).’ You beat them at the end of their career. You didn’t beat them when they were in their prime, killing it. You’re not fighting these young, hungry guys. To me, he’s got the best matchups. I’ve tried to fight him since he got in the UFC.”

Allen is 27-7 as a pro and riding a three-fight winning streak. He’s coming off a decision win over Edmen Shahbazyan, and on the win streak, he also has a TKO win over Reinier de Ridder and a decision win over Marvin Vettori.
