Bellator 222 Results: Lyoto Machida stops Chael Sonnen with a flying knee (Video)

A light heavyweight bout between fan favorites Lyoto Machida and Chael Sonnen served as the co-headliner of tonight’s Bellator 222 event in New York City.

Chael Sonnen was last seen in action at Bellator 208 where he suffered a first round TKO loss to MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko. Prior to the setback, Sonnen was coming off back-to-Back decision victories over former MMA champions Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Wanderlei Silva.

Meanwhile, Lyoto Machida entered Bellator 222 on a three fight winning streak, his latest being a split decision victory over former champ Rafael Carvalho at middleweight.

Round one of the Bellator 222 co-main event begins and Chael Sonnen comes out with immediate pressure. He shoots in for a takedown but Lyoto Machida stuffs it. ‘The Dragon’ with a body kick. He follows that up with a nice knee to the body. Another kick and then another knee from Machida. Chael shoots in and gets a takedown. He immediately takes the back of Lyoto. Machida scrambles and gets back to his feet. The fighters battle against the cage. Machida breaks free and lands a kick. He follows up with a flying knee that drops Sonnen. Lyoto Machida jumps on the American with ground and pound. Sonnen somehow manages to get back to his feet. Chael will live to fight another round.

Round two begins and Lyoto Machida drops Chael Sonnen again with a flying knee. This time the ground and pound puts Chael away. Wow!!!
