Chael Sonnen praises Josh Hokit’s ‘character development’ despite UFC Freedom 250 interview controversy

UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen thinks he has heavyweight Josh Hokit’s marketing strategy figured out after his recent wins.

Polarizing heavyweight Josh Hokit continues to tally up victories inside the Octagon and make plenty of headlines outside of it.

Hokit, who defeated UFC knockout leader Derrick Lewis at UFC Freedom 250 last month, became the central figure of controversy when he claimed in his post-fight interview that former first lady Michelle Obama is a biological man. UFC CEO Dana White later said he was ‘disgusted’ by Hokit’s interview remarks, but doesn’t plan on punishing the controversial star for his actions on the White House lawn.

As Hokit prepares for a potential heavyweight title shot, the heavyweight star has irked many fighters and fans with his bizarre comments when a mic is in his hands. But one UFC Hall of Famer believes Hokit’s different personas and ‘heel’ roles are part of a bigger story.

Chael Sonnen weighs in on Josh Hokit’s ‘character development’ after UFC wins

In a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen was asked about Hokit’s persona and whether or not fans will eventually get behind him.

“Josh Hokit has a very clear plan. He’s developing a character, and that character hasn’t arrived yet,” Sonnen said of Hokit.

“He’s telling a story – and it’s going to take him almost a year to do it. The Josh Hokit character that people think they know, the three [personalities], no they don’t! He’s telling the story and actually developing the character.

“If he was to get ran out of the UFC, you would never know. You stick with this guy for another year, and then you decide whether you like what he was building up to.”
