Anthony Pettis expresses interest in welterweight fight with Stephen Thompson

When it comes to top strikers in MMA, there are few that are quite as unique as former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis.

A matchup between the two is something that would only have been thought of as pure fantasy… Prior to today, that is.

After a brief stint at featherweight, Anthony Pettis returned to lightweight where he has since gone 2-2. However, it looks like Showtime might now be considering a move up to welterweight as he eyes a bout against Thompson.

“Heard somebody is looking for a fight. What you guys think?” Pettis asked on Instagram. “Take my talents to WW and take on the boy? Comment ⬇️ let me know if y’all get excited for this one”

For Anthony Pettis, his last fight took place at UFC 229 in the fight of the night with former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. Despite the great success that he had during moments in the fight, Ferguson would end up getting the better of Pettis with a second-round TKO by doctor’s stoppage at the end of the round. Pettis had broken his hand and was unable to continue.

Wonderboy, on the other hand, hasn’t fought since May 2018 when he lost a razor-thin unanimous decision to Darren Till in Till’s hometown of Liverpool, England.

There were some brief links between Thompson and Robbie Lawler for a potential next pairing but nothing would end up coming to fruition. Lawler is now set to welcome Ben Askren to the UFC at UFC 235 on March 2.

All we know now is that both Pettis and Thompson are looking for fights and preferably sooner rather than later.
