A middleweight title fight between current champion Chris Weidman and number one contender Vitor Belfort is being targeted to headline February’s UFC 184 event in Los Angeles.

UFC officials announced the potential bout yesterday.

Weidman and Belfort were supposed to headline December’s UFC 181 event in Las Vegas, but the champ suffered a broken hand in training forcing the bout to be postponed.

Chris Weidman was last seen in action at July’s UFC 175 event in Las Vegas, where he earned a hard-fought unanimous decision win over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Prior to that, “The All American” was coming off back-to-back stoppage victories over long time UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Meanwhile, former UFC champion Vitor Belfort has looked absolutely phenomenal in his most recent octagon appearances. The Brazilian slugger has reeled off 3-straight head kick knockout wins, defeating opponents Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson in those contests.

UFC 184 is expected to take place February 28 live from Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The event will air on pay-per-view following the prelims which are expected to show on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
