Overeem Calls For A Title Shot Against Winner Of Velasquez vs. Werdum

Alistair Overeem will be stepping into the Octagon to square off against Ben Rothwell in September, and he hopes a win over Rothwell will get him a title shot against the winner of Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum.

Overeem spoke with Submission Radio to talk about the bout.

“Well it’s hard to predict because Cain is a tough bastard and Fabricio is a tricky bastard,” Overeem told Submission Radio. “It can go both ways, I just don’t know. Cain doesn’t fight that often so it’s hard to gauge his improvement level, and Fabricio is improving all the time.

“60/40 for Cain, but don’t rule out Fabricio. Many times people have ruled him out, and every time he keeps crawling back. He’s tough, like a cockroach.”

The Reem is coming off a win over Frank Mir back in December, and will look to get on another win streak with a win over Rothwell.

“Still I think Cain should get him, 60/40 for Cain. But, but I would like to fight Fabricio for the title. And on my own personal goals I definitely see a UFC title upcoming. You know, it’s been a little bit of a rough time, a lot of changes. Changes are never good, usually are for the better, as you see in my case it wasn’t. But yeah, now everything is kind of settled down and I definitely see a new title coming.”

Part of the interest behind a bout with Werdum stems from Overeem’s kimura loss to Werdum back in 2006 when the two met at Pride Total Elimination Absolute in the openeing round of the 2006 Grand Prix.
