Hendricks reveals why his body shut down — ‘My intestines dried up’

By BJPENN.COM News - October 12, 2015

Johny Hendricks was set to fight in front of his home-state crowd in Texas at “UFC 192”, but weight cutting complications forced him out of his bout with Tyron Woodley. It was expected that whoever walked out of the octagon with their hand raised in the co-headliner would face the UFC Welterweight Champion after UFC 195 took place.

Instead, Hendricks dropped down two positions to third in the official UFC rankings and Woodley replaced him at second in the division. Rumors started circulating whether or not the IV-bag ban impacted Hendricks’ decision to pull out of the fight, but it was a complication with meat, kidney stones and dry intestines that forced him on the sidelines.

“I was drinking two and half gallons a day and I was walking right around one-ninety-three, which is normal,” Hendricks explained on MMA Hour. “Then my body just quit, I couldn’t go to the bathroom. It was as if my body was holding on to everything, which was sort of weird. So we started doing the weight cut, and I was still drinking two and half gallons a day. Then I just hit a plateau where I would feel light-headed, which is common. I didn’t think anything of it, and then I woke up on Thursday feeling really good at 184 pounds. I thought it was going to be perfect, lost ten pounds then wake up on Friday and have to lose an extra three pounds. I went and did my first session and only lost two pounds.”

This is where things went downhill for the former UFC Welterweight Champion.

“I was like, ‘Oh boy.’ That was when my body felt different,” Hendricks continued. “I tried to push through it, went and did another session and worked out and that is when I realized something was wrong. Both my left and right sides started to hurt. I went to the hospital and that’s when I found out that my intestines were dried up and that I had a kidney stone on my right side.”

That would force just about anybody out of a fight. Dana White has stated that as far as he is concerned, Hendricks is a middleweight. Should “Big Rig” get another shot to make weight with the IV-bag ban in effect? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
