Jon Jones using words from Dominick Cruz as an inspiration for his comeback

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was closely watching the UFC Fight Night 81 event on Sunday night. Jones who has been out of competition after being suspended and stripped of his title for legal troubles back in 2015 is looking at the new bantamweight champion for inspiration in his own return to the Octagon. Dominick Cruz who has battled injuries has only fought three times in the Octagon in the past four years. His title fight on Sunday against T.J. Dillashaw was his first fight since his win over Takeya Mizugaki, which took place in September 2014.

It was a tough night for Matt Mitrione and his eyes on Sunday night. After suffering accidental eye pokes from Travis Browne at UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston, Mitrione suffered a broken orbital floor and injured shoulder at the hands of Browne after a third round TKO stoppage. Mitrione’s eye was in terrible condition after the fight was stopped and Mitrione revealed his injuries through an update Twitter.

The UFC bantamweight title was on the line in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ in Boston, as current champion T.J. Dillashaw (12-2 MMA) squared off with former title holder Dominick Cruz (20-1 MMA). No touch of gloves to start this one. Dillashaw opens with a body kick. Quick takedown by Cruz. T.J right back to his feet. Good leg kick from Cruz. Nice right hand from the former champ. Head kick misses for Dillashaw who falls. Cruz on top briefly but T.J. scrambles free. Good shot to the body from Cruz. Nice leg kick by Dillashaw. Cruz returns with a right hand. And another. Very crisp left hand lands from Cruz who seems to be breathing hard. Dillashaw misses with a right but lands a good body kick. Good three-punch combo from Cruz. Nice right hand from Dillashaw. Good punches from both fighters land. A left from Dillashaw. Cruz with another right. Dillashaw tries a takedown but Cruz stuffs it to end round 1.

A key heavyweight tilt between Travis Browne (18-3-1 MMA) and Matt Mitrione (9-5 MMA) took place on tonight’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ main card in Boston. Travis Browne opens up with a front kick that misses. He tries a kick to the body. Mitrione charges forward with punches but doesn’t connect. Good leg kick lands for Matt. Decent right from Mitrione. Body kick from “Hapa”. Matt misses with an attempted body kick. Left jab from Mitrione. Good knee from Browne. Followed by a front kick to the body. Mitrione responds with a kick of his own. Nice right hand from Matt. “Hapa” with another front kick. Big right lands for Matt. Travis falls down but gets up and seems to be ok. Both men are showing a lot of respect for one another. Mitrione attempts a lead left but gets an accidental poke in the eye from Browne. We restart and the horn sounds before either fighter decides to engage.

A lightweight bout between Ross Pearson (18-10 MMA) and Francisco Trinaldo (19-4 MMA) kicked off tonight’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ main card in Boston. Round one begins and both men exchange low kicks. Trinaldo throws a front kick to the body. Pearson responds with a leg kick followed by a head kick that is blocked. Trinaldo throws a lead left that misses. Pearson is stalking him. Big body kick by Ross. Good left from Francisco. He tries a head kick but just misses. Person throws some kicks. Another big head kick that misses from Trinaldo. Pearson responds with a body kick and then a right hand. Leg kick from Ross. Good left jab lands for Trinaldo and then a knee. Good right hand by Pearson. Both men throw and miss head kicks. Head kick from Trinaldo is blocked by Pearson. Another high kick gets through for Trinaldo who ends the round by slamming Pearson.

A welterweight bout between Patrick Cote (23-9 MMA) and Ben Saunders (19-7-2 MMA) took place during tonight’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ card in Boston. Cote starts off by chopping at the legs of Ben. Saunders responds with a body kick before earning an early takedown. “The Predator” throws up an armbar and almost locks it in from guard. The fighters scramble and Cote ends up in top position. Excellent ground and pound from the Canadian. Cote lands some more shots from top position to close out round one.

Former middleweights Tim Boetsch (18-10 MMA) and Ed Herman (23-11 MMA) squared off in a light heavyweight bout at Boston’s ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ event. Round one begins and Boetsch is finding a home for his overhand right early. Herman responds with a stiff jab. Boetsch tags Herman with a big left that puts “Short Fuse” on rubber legs. Some solid uppercuts land for Boetsch while in the clinch. Herman seems to have recovered and lands a couple of decent shots of his own. Both men stand and trade shots to end round one.

Featherweights Maximo Blanco (12-7-1 MMA) and Luke Sanders (11-0 MMA) squared off as part of the ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ prelims in Boston. Blanco opens with a high kick. He follows with a good kick to the body. Sanders answers with a few punches of his own. Big shots from both fighters. Sanders throws a couple of big left hands. Blanco smiles and returns fire. Sanders with low kicks. Sanders drops Blanco with a counter left. Blanco immediately recovers and locks in an arm-triangle choke as Sanders attempted to follow him to the floor. Sanders squirms loose and gets back to his feet. Sanders with another big left hand and Blanco hits the floor. Sanders moves in and locks up a rear-naked choke. It is deep and Blanco has to tap.

Lightweights Paul Felder (11-2 MMA) and Daron Cruickshank (16-2 MMA) squared off during the ‘UFC Fight Night 81’ preliminary card in Boston. Both fighters are happy to exchange to begin round one. Solid pressure from Felder. Cruikshank lands a front leg side kick to the face. Good combo from Daron followed by a head kick. Cruickshank shoots in for a takedown but Felder uses the position to grab a guillotine choke. It looked to be locked in tight but “The Detroit Super Star” shook free. Good knee to the body from Felder. Spinning back kick from Cruikshank. Felder lands a takedown but Daron sweeps him to wind up in top position. Round one ends.
