Robert Whittaker interested in fighting Sean Strickland on rumored Perth card: “I owe Australia a fight”

Robert Whittaker is interested in a matchup with Sean Strickland if he doesn’t get a title shot his next time out.

Whittaker returned to the win column earlier this month with a hard-fought decision victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 298. It was a solid performance from the Aussie who is back in the title picture following the win.

Currently, Dricus Du Plessis does not have his next fight booked so there is a chance that Robert Whittaker gets the title fight. But, if he doesn’t, he says Sean Strickland interests him as his next opponent on the rumored Perth card this summer.

“Sean’s up there as well. I think that’s a good direction. It’s moved me towards that goal that I’m looking for. Moves me in the right direction. So, I think that they’re the most logical choices moving forward though. The only thing I can kind of put down is the date I’m looking for. So, I hear on the grapevine that there’s a Perth card in August, perhaps. I would love to get on that, to run a show with that,” Whittaker said to Submission Radio.

Robert Whittaker says he owes Australia a fight, so he wants to be on that card one way or another and thinks Sean Strickland makes the most sense. He also believes if it is a Fight Night card and not a pay-per-view, it makes sense for him and Strickland to headline the card with the winner getting the next title shot.

“Five rounds comes with a lot more work. It’s not like I don’t want to do it, it’s just it’s a lot more work. But in saying that, five rounds also means that I’m most likely headlining it, and I would love that. I love that idea too,” Whittaker said. “Because I think I owe Perth a fight. I owe Australia a fight. So, to be able to do that would be the bee’s knees, if you would. But Sean, he said it himself, all I do is blitz. So, I’m going to blitz him a lot.”

On paper, a fight between Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland does make sense, but whether or not it will happen is to be seen.
