To close out 2016, Paige VanZant looked to capitalize on her August 2016 win over Bec Rawlings as she stepped into the Octagon with ‘The Karate Hottie’ Michelle Waterson for a highly anticipated UFC Sacramento main event showdown. While many expected Waterson to look to use her elite level striking to pick VanZant apart, while looking for the finish, Waterson instead opted to take the fight to the ground and finish VanZant with a rear-naked choke in the first round to cement her place at the top of the UFC’s women’s strawweight division.

In the co-main event of this exciting card, 23-year-old strawweight prospect Alexa Grasso took on veteran Felice Herrig. From the early vantage point, Grasso was widely expected to blow through her experienced foe – as evidenced by her status as a 3-1 betting favorite. In the end, however, Herrig pulled off the upset with a nice unanimous decision win.

Last night, in the main event of UFC on Fox 22, strawweight prospect Paige VanZant had her rise halted by a first-round submission loss to former Invicta atomweight champ Michelle Waterson. Shortly after this lopsided loss, the fan favorite spoke with the media about the fight. “I got caught,” VanZant said of her submission loss to Waterson. “I’m not gonna overthink it. I need to work on my jiu-jitsu and that’s it.”

Saturday night in the main event of ‘UFC Fight Night: Sacramento’ women’s strawweight prospects Paige VanZant and Michelle Waterson stepped into the Octagon for a highly anticipated showdown which likely would see the winner catapulted into the top 5 of the women’s strawweight division. While VanZant came out of the gate looking extremely quick, Waterson managed to land a throw from the clinch and ultimately submit VanZant in the very first round with a rear-naked choke. The win marked the second of Waterson’s UFC career, and also marked a successful return to the Octagon following a seventeen month layoff.

In late August, the UFC returned to beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada with UFC on Fox 21. On that event’s main card, fan favorite strawweight Paige VanZant returned to the cage after a stint on Dancing with the Stars to remove the batteries from Bec Rawlings with a second-round head-kick. Needless to say, it was a great night to be VanZant. It was not such a great night to be Rawlings, who made the long flight home to Australia with an ugly new loss on her record – and probably a concussion.
