A light heavyweight bout between Jimi Manuwa and Aleksandar Rakic served as the co-headliner of today’s UFC Stockholm event. Jimi Manuwa (17-6 MMA) enters tonight’s contest in desperate need of a win. The ‘Poster Boy’ is coming off three straight setbacks, his most recent being a knockout loss to Thiago Santos at December’s UFC 231 event in Toronto. Manuwa has gone 6-5 in his eleven career fights under the UFC banner.

UFC welterweight standout Mike Perry (13-4 MMA) is sick of having ‘a bunch of fat bastards’ lecture him about weight cutting. “Platinum” recently took to Twitter where he went off on the subject, this while explaining that athletes would not fight as good or be as strong without weight cutting.

A lightweight bout between Leonardo Santos and Stevie Ray took place on the prelims of today’s UFC Stockholm event in Sweden. Leonardo Santos (16-3-1 MMA) will return to action for the first time since UFC 204 in October of 2016. The former TUF Brazil winner, Santos, has gone 10-0-1 over his past eleven contests which includes a TKO victory over Kevin Lee.

The octagon returns to Sweden for today’s UFC Stockholm event, a twelve-bout fight card headlined by a key light heavyweight scrap between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith. Both Smith and Gustafsson will enter tonight’s contest looking to rebound, this after each man fell short in their respective bids to dethrone reigning light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Two-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Johnson is retired from MMA competition… but the overall combat sports hiatus is about to end. Submission Underground Grappling (SUG) announced on Friday that their ninth event is set to go down on July 7 live as usual from the Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon. Despite SUG Founder Chael Sonnen announcing during the last event that SUG 9 will take place in Las Vegas, that obviously didn’t end up working out.

From the sounds of it, former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre could be the next mixed martial arts star to make the jump to pro wrestling — although perhaps only on a one-off basis. St-Pierre claims WWE approached him at the ESPN awards, and that he directed them to contact his management. Based on his comments, it seems like some kind of deal could potentially be reached with the pro wrestling institution, although the Canadian legend clarified that he is not interested in a full-time wrestling career.

Colby Covington hasn’t fought since UFC 225 back in June of 2018. Since then, he has had nasal surgery and a fairly public dispute with Dana White and the UFC — both of which have slowed down his return. Having been on the bench for close to a year, Covington isn’t happy with what he has seen. He believes UFC fans have been robbed, as the promotion’s champions aren’t fighting regularly. But he assures that once he becomes champion, he will fight anyone the UFC offers.

Frankie Edgar believes it could be time for his former rival BJ Penn to hang up the gloves. “Do I wish he would retire and just enjoy life? Probably,” Edgar told MMAjunkie. “It’s probably what’s best for his body, but I don’t really know what’s going on in his head. Volkan Oezdemir expected to return the Octagon at UFC Stockholm this weekend opposite his friend Ilir Latifi. Unfortunately, Latifi was forced off the card at the last minute, leaving Switzerland’s Oezdemir without a dance partner. “Due to a back injury, Ilir Latifi has been forced to withdraw from his Saturday UFC Fight Night bout against Volkan Oezdemir,” the UFC announced in a statement.

All fighters scheduled for UFC Stockholm have made weight. The card is scheduled for tomorrow in Stockholm, Sweden and is headlined by Sweden’s own Alexander Gustafsson (18-5) vs Anthony Smith (31-14). Gustafsson was the first to be weighed and came in at 205 pounds. The former middleweight Smith hit the scales at 206 but made weight comfortably as he was still wearing shorts and socks. Both fighters are coming off a loss to light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and will be looking to get back on track.

In the main event of UFC 240, Frankie Edgar will once again be fighting for a UFC belt when he takes on Max Holloway. However, the oddsmakers don’t favor “The Answer” to win this fight. He is a +350 underdog, given he is just 1-1 in his last two. And, his last win was against Cub Swanson back in April of 2018.

The newest UFC champion, Jessica Andrade dealt with a scare in her native country of Brazil on Thursday morning as she and her wife were robbed at gunpoint. Fernanda Gomes, Andrade’s wife, shared on Facebook that the couple had been driving in their Honda HRV in Niteroi before the car was stopped and they were robbed of their smartphones and the vehicle by perpetrators with guns.

On Saturday night, UFC Stockholm takes place as it is scheduled to showcase six of the top light heavyweights in the promotion in its final three bouts. Well, at least that was originally the case as Ilir Latifi is no longer going to be able to make the walk. The UFC released a statement Thursday that Sweden’s Latifi was forced out of his bout with Volkan Oezdemir due to injury.
