Mehdi Zatout has decided to make a comeback for ONE Championship’s historic debut in Qatar on March 1.

Zuhayr Al-Qahtani and Mehdi Zatout

The Algerian kickboxer takes on Arab pugilist Zuhayr Al-Qahtani in a 147-pound boxing bout at ONE 166: Qatar. The event broadcasts live on pay-per-view from the Lusail Sports Arena.

Zatout has had a memorable career, particularly under the ONE banner. There, he demonstrated his skills in both Muay Thai and kickboxing.

In September 2021, he came tantalizingly close to claiming the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title, challenging Capitan Petchyindee in a hard-fought clash.

Over a year later, the former ISKA and WBC Muay Thai World Champion achieved redemption by scoring a first-round TKO victory over Asa Ten Pow.

Following this triumph, an emotional Zatout left his gloves in the Circle. This signaled his retirement from competitive action.

However, the allure of a new challenge has proven too enticing for the 40-year-old veteran. So he has been prompted to return to action.

Mehdi Zatout faces no pushover in Qatar

Mehdi Zatout’s return will be no walk in the park. He faces Zuhayr Al-Qahtani in the latter’s own sport.

A pioneer in Saudi Arabia’s professional boxing scene, Al-Qahtani holds an immaculate 9-0 record.

His undefeated streak has paved the way for Al-Qahtani to capture the WBC Middle Eastern Championship at the expense of Omar Dusary in December 2019.

With Qatar playing host to ONE 166, Al-Qahtani will undoubtedly enjoy significant support from local fans when he steps inside the Circle for the first time.

For those unfamiliar, it’s worth noting that this is not the promotion’s first venture into “the sweet science.”

In October 2018, ONE hosted Srisaket Sor Rungvisai‘s successful defense of the WBC Super Flyweight World Title against Iran Diaz.

Now, the world’s largest martial arts organization aims to showcase the perfect blend of talent and excitement in its second boxing endeavor.
