UFC bantamweight Merab Dvalishvili is officially stepping up as the backup fighter for Saturday’s UFC 299 event.

Merab Dvalishvili

Just a matter of weeks ago, Merab Dvalishvili defeated Henry Cejudo. In doing so, he set himself up nicely for a future shot at the UFC bantamweight championship. As we know, two men will be competing for that belt this weekend. Sean O’Malley will be defending the strap against Marlon Vera in the main event of the utterly incredible UFC 299 showcase.

Many had wondered whether or not we’d get an official backup fighter in Miami, and now, we have our answer.

As per his management team, Merab Dvalishvili will be making an insanely quick turnaround to cut weight once again in the hope that he gets called up to fight on Saturday night.

Dvalishvili heads for Miami

“[Plane] bookked @MerabDvalishvili is headed to Miami tmrw for #UFC299 as the official title fight back up. Let’s make it a pink panty night! #MiamiMerab”

You may not like his fight style, but nobody can deny the unbelievable spirit of Merab Dvalishvili. He continues to defy all expectations put in front of him, and he does so with a smile on his face. There’s a good chance he won’t get the opportunity to compete this weekend, of course. Even with that being the case, though, he’s still more than willing to make the trip over and cut weight. If that doesn’t speak volumes about his dedication to the sport, then nothing will.

What was your first reaction to hearing that Merab Dvalishvili will be the backup fighter for the main event at UFC 299? Would you favor him against either of the main eventers? Let us know, BJPENN Nation!
