Junior dos Santos rips Brock Lesnar’s potential title shot, calls out Alistair Overeem

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s return to Adelaide, Australia, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos moved onto a two-fight streak with a second-round TKO of the formerly undefeated Tai Tuivasa.

With this victory, Dos Santos is once again right in the mix in the heavyweight division. Unfortunately for him, the next shot at Daniel Cormier’s heavyweight title is expected to go former champ and long-time WWE star Brock Lesnar.

Junior dos Santos discussed Daniel Cormier, and the champ’s desired fight with Brock Lesnar, at the UFC Adelaide post-fight press conference.

“[Daniel Cormier is] incredible,” dos Santos said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “He’s an amazing athlete. He’s doing some amazing things in his career. I think it would be very good for me — actually for anyone — to fight someone like him. I don’t know what’s happening right now. I think he wants to fight Brock Lesnar or something, it doesn’t make any sense for me. I don’t really care. If the UFC wants to make that happen, that’s fine.”

“The way I understand is that’s what Daniel Cormier wants to do to make money,” dos Santos added. “So somehow, people want to see that, because if they pay to see that it’s gonna be interesting for the UFC, of course. Somehow, Brock Lesnar sells. Somehow they want to see him fighting. I don’t know why. Why? Because he says stupid things? Because he’s a big guy who says stupid things? It doesn’t really make much sense for me.

“Even because he doesn’t deserve to fight for the title. He has no record for that. Also, because, man, he was out because USADA took him out. Not because he wants. USADA took him out and now he’s gonna come back and fight for the title. If MMA is a sport, a real sport, it doesn’t make any sense. But like I said, if people want to see that, we have to give [it to] them.”

With his desired fight with Daniel Cormier seemingly off the table, Junior dos Santos suggested another opponent for his next fight: Alistair Overeem, who he lost to back in 2015.

“I think this rematch would make a lot of sense now,” he said. “Overeem is a smart guy. Every time he asks for something, it’s because he thinks it’s going to be better for him. I don’t do that type of shit. … I’m asking for him because it makes sense. In my mind, it makes sense to do this rematch right now.”
