Jose Aldo on UFC interim title: "It means nothing"

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will once again have the opportunity to wear UFC gold, this if he is able to defeat former lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar for a second time when the pair square off for the UFC’s interim featherweight title at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas. Aldo was not happy when he learned that the UFC had booked current featherweight champion Conor McGregor to fight Nate Diaz in a rematch that “means nothing” at the same event (UFC 200). Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is still not happy that the UFC decided to put Conor McGregor in a welterweight rematch against Nate Diaz at July’s UFC 200 event. Aldo, who had been campaigning for a rematch with McGregor after suffering a shocking 13-second defeat to the Irishman in December, will now rematch Frankie Edgar for the UFC’s interim featherweight title on July 9.

Officials added that the Aldo vs. Edgar rematch will be for the promotions interim featherweight title.

After it was announced on UFC Tonight that Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor would have their welterweight rematch at UFC 200, and that Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar would be competing for the interim featherweight championship, a poster was released for the main event bout. Aldo went undefeated for nearly 10 years spanning from his GFC 1 win back in 2006 to his UFC 179 title defense against Chad Mendes. In addition, Aldo was undefeated for 5 years in the UFC until Conor McGregor knocked him out in just 13 seconds.

Since Conor McGregor’s 2nd round submission loss to Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196 last week, it was revealed that McGregor would be returning to featherweight to defend his championship. This week UFC President Dana White visited with McGregor, and revealed McGregor’s intentions to defend his featherweight championship at UFC 200 in July. With that being said, the decision of who he will defend the belt against is not an easy one for the UFC brass.

The former pound-for-pound king said he knew what the outcome would be ahead of the fight and chose to watch something more entertaining to him when the fight aired. According to Bloody Elbow, Aldo did an interview with Sportv and said he opted to watch an adult channel over UFC 196.

However, with less than two weeks given for an opportunity to rematch Conor McGregor, Aldo turned down the fight when McGregor’s originally scheduled opponent Rafael dos Anjos pulled out due to an injury and spoke on the MMA Hour about his decision. “Any professional needs time to train,” Aldo said (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “It’s not a cockfight where I go there and put my rooster to fight. While McGregor took just 13-seconds to bring Aldo’s dreams and records to a screeching halt, the Brazilian still does not have any respect for “The Notorious” and told media in Rio de Janeiro that he doesn’t see his glory lasting much longer. “I think it’s tough,” Aldo said when asked if he thinks McGregor can beat dos Anjos and go after the welterweight title next (transcribed by MMA Fighting). “And I’ll say this: I don’t think he will have any belt by the end of the year. And everyone will forget him. He has this dream, this goal, but you can be sure that he won’t have any (belt) by the end of the year.”
