Islam Makhachev has confirmed that he was offered a super fight with Leon Edwards for UFC 300.

The historic UFC 300 takes place on Saturday April 13th at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

Well, it’s now being disclosed that the current UFC lightweight champion, Makhachev, was offered the chance to fight Edwards for the welterweight title but turned down the opportunity.

The current welterweight champion, Leon Edwards (22-3 MMA) last fought and defeated Colby Covington (17-4 MMA) by unanimous decision last December at UFC 296.

Makhachev, speaking with ‘MMA Junkie’ confirmed the news:

“It’s not possible because we have Ramadan now. It’s one month of fasting, and it’s not possible to train in Ramadan. It’s very hard. You have to fast when the sun rises, and all day you have to fast.”

Ramadan starts on March 12th and it ends on April 9th, just four days before UFC 300.

Continuing, the Dagestan said:

“You can only eat for five or six hours. Training this time is very hard. I asked Ali (Abdelaziz) if they can push UFC 300 like two weeks, I will be ready, but he said it’s not possible.”

Concluding, the 32-year-old shared his disappointment in turning down the opportunity to become a double champion (h/t MMAMania):

“This was a dream fight for me. I don’t have any small chance to fight at UFC 300, that’s why I’m very upset. It’s a big deal, you know, a big fight with Leon Edwards for the second belt, but this time I missed the chance and I’m very upset honestly…. One day, I hope they will call me again.”

Islam Makhachev (25-1 MMA) has not fought since October of 2023 when he knocked out Alexander Volkanovski (26-4 MMA) at UFC 294.

With 13 consecutive victories in the Octagon, Makhachev is still waiting for his next opponent.
