Ian Machado Garry has used Sean Strickland’s win over Khamzat Chimaev as an example of big upsets being possible ahead of UFC 330.

In the main event of UFC 330, Ian Machado Garry has the chance to make history as he attempts to become the new UFC welterweight champion. He will challenge Islam Makhachev which, as we know, isn’t the easiest of tasks for anyone to face.

Machado Garry has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and if he can get through Islam, he will cement himself as one of the best fighters on the planet.

Someone who knows a thing or two about big upsets is Sean Strickland, who has defeated Israel Adesanya and Khamzat Chimaev to become a two-time world champion in the UFC. In a recent interview, Machado Garry made sure to reference the latter of those two wins.

Machado Garry reflects on Strickland’s upset win

“If people think when Sean Strickland goes out and beats Khamzat Chimaev and upsets the apple cart, and no one expected, no one can sit here and think that it’s impossible that I can beat Islam Makhachev,” Machado Garry told Paul Browne.

“If anything, I’m a far more dangerous threat. I’m far more complete and I have way, way, way more ways of winning that fight. I am the most dangerous opponent for Islam Makhachev, and it’s my job to go out and prove that on Aug. 15.”

“My mindset, my vision, and my fight IQ,” Machado Garry said. “Three things that can’t be taught. You either have them or you don’t.”

It’s certainly a good sign that Ian is feeling confident, but the size of this challenge is a daunting prospect for anyone, and he needs to be picture perfect if he is going to inflict a defeat on one of the best to ever do it.
