Dustin Poirier could be fighting for a title shot on Saturday at UFC 299.

Poirier is set to face Benoit Saint-Denis in the co-main event of UFC 299 in a highly-anticipated matchup. It’s also a crucial fight for Poirier due to the fact he is coming off a KO loss to Justin Gaethje. Despite the loss, Poirier is still a title contender at lightweight, and he could get a title shot with a win on Saturday.

According to Ali Abdelaziz, who is the manager of Islam Makhachev, he saw Poirier at the fighter hotel and told him if he wins on Saturday he could get a title shot in June.

“Get this win. Fight Islam in June,” Abdelaziz said.

“Let’s go, come on,” Poirier responded.

To no surprise, Dustin Poirier was quick to say yes to it, as it is a chance for ‘The Diamond’ to become the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. It is a bit of a surprise that Poirier would get the title shot, but with Islam Makhachev wanting to fight in June, the winner of Justin Gaethje-Max Holloway or Charles Oliveira-Arman Tsarukyan, which both happen in April, may not be enough time for them to turn around.

With that, the stakes for Poirier-Saint-Denis on Saturday night at UFC 299 just got higher as the winner could very well turn around in June to face Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title. If Poirier wins and does get the title shot, it would be his third crack at the undisputed lightweight title in the UFC.

Dustin Poirier enters his UFC 299 fight as the betting underdog and is 29-8 and one No Contest and coming off a KO loss to Justin Gaethje. Before that, he scored a submission win over Michael Chandler to return to the win column. In his career, Poirier holds notable wins over Conor McGregor, twice, Max Holloway, twice, Justin Gaethje, and Eddie Alvarez among others.
