After TJ Dillashaw left Team Alpha Male last year, things were understandably tense between Faber and Dillashaw given the fact that Faber was Dillashaw’s mentor at one point in time.

Back in January, Dominick Cruz returned to the Octagon and defeated TJ Dillashaw to reclaim the UFC bantamweight championship. Immediately following his win over Dillashaw, Cruz found himself being called out by his nemesis, Urijah Faber. The UFC ultimately opted to book Cruz vs. Faber III for UFC 199 on June 4th in Inglewood California. Ahead of that fight things have been tense between Cruz and Faber during media appearances. During an interview with MMAJunkie, Cruz put the bantamweight division on blast for its lack of depth.

Several years ago Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig was brought in as the striking coach at Team Alpha Male. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out between Ludwig and TAM owner Urijah Faber. Ludwig left and opened the ‘Bang Muay Thai HQ’ in Broomfield Colorado, and T.J. Dillashaw began spending part of his training camps training with the striking guru. Ultimately, Dillashaw left Team Alpha Male to train with Elevation Fight Team in Colorado, forcing a rift between himself and mentor Urijah Faber.

Dillashaw to reclaim the UFC bantamweight championship he never lost, there was much speculation as to whether Dillashaw would be getting an immediate rematch given how close the fight was. After the bantamweight championship was wrapped around Cruz’s waist, it didn’t take long for Urijah Faber to call out his nemesis for a trilogy fight. While there was uncertainty as to whether Dillashaw or Faber would get the title shot against Cruz, the UFC ultimately decided to cash in on the hype of a trilogy fight between Cruz and Faber.

Earlier this month the UFC announced that a trilogy bout between Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber would take place in the co-main event of UFC 199 in June. Faber won the pair’s first meeting under the WEC banner back in 2007, however it was Cruz who got the nod in 2011 to retain the UFC’s bantamweight championship.

In the 5th round of Dominick Cruz’s ‘UFC Fight Night: Boston’ main event scrap with TJ Dillashaw, Cruz seemed to re-injure his knee. While the MMA world was extremely concerned that Cruz re-tore his ACL, the newly crowned UFC bantamweight champion revealed post-fight that it was a foot injury.
