Daniel Cormier reacts to rumors that the UFC may introduce a 165lbs division: “If you do 165, it has to be Conor”

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has given his thoughts on a potential 165-pound division in the promotion.

Conor McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal

For the longest time now, there has been discussion surrounding a potential 165-pound division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It seems to stem from the gap that exists between 155 and 170, aka lightweight and welterweight. There is a popular opinion out there from some fans and media members that we should see 155, 165, 175 and 185 take over as the new weight classes in the UFC.

Alas, up to this point, the company has shown no interest in implementing such a change.

In a recent video, Daniel Cormier decided to weigh in (pun not intended) on the idea.

Cormier’s UFC weight class thoughts

“If you do 165, it has to be Conor,” Cormier said. “You’re introducing a new weight class; it has to mean something. You can’t have two normal fighters introducing the weight.”

Cormier did, however, go on to admit that now wouldn’t be the best time to make this change.

“I just think that right now you can’t do it,” Cormier said. “You can’t do it now because it would feel like you’re doing it specifically for, or to appease, Conor McGregor.”

The Conor McGregor factor is, of course, something that needs to be considered. With his upcoming bout against Michael Chandler looming large, there’s certainly a chance that the UFC will try and add a belt into the mix in order to spice things up. Either way, though, this is a debate that’s likely to rage on for months and possibly even years to come.
