After Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill his media obligations for the event, talk of a potential boxing superfight with legendary prizefighter Floyd Mayweather picked up. Ultimately nothing came of the rumors, and McGregor was booked to fight Nate Diaz in a highly anticipated welterweight rematch at UFC 202 on August 20th. During a recent interview with Business Post, SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh gave his thoughts on the bout:

While initial reports stated that the UFC brass was extremely close to working out a deal, there have been conflicting reports since then as to whether or not the promotion will be sold. In the event that the promotion is sold, UFC featherweight champion could seek equity in the company.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor suffered the first loss of his UFC career to Nate Diaz this past March in Las Vegas. Diaz submitted the Irish superstar in the second-round of their main event fight at UFC 196.

Conor McGregor will be looking to get revenge on Nate Diaz when the pair square off in the main event of UFC 202 later this summer. The current UFC featherweight champion was submitted by Diaz in the second-round of their welterweight fight at UFC 196 this past March.

Following UFC 196, where Nate Diaz submitted Conor McGregor, the pair were slated to fight in the main event of UFC 200. McGregor wasn’t happy with the situation, and surprised the MMA community when he retired via Twitter. The fight was ultimately scrapped after McGregor refused to fulfill his promotional obligations for the event. Ultimately however, the pair were rebooked to fight at UFC 202 in August.

Prior to UFC 189, where Conor McGregor was initially slated to fight Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight championship, McGregor injured his knee prior to the bout. Aldo then injured his ribs, and was replaced by Chad Mendes, who McGregor defeated via TKO to claim the interim featherweight championship. Unbeknownst to the MMA community, McGregor had trained with Rory MacDonald, and torn nearly his entire ACL leading up to UFC 189. In John Kavanagh’s new book, he recalls being in Dublin when he received a text from one of McGregor’s training partners about the situation.
