The UFC was in Mexico City, Mexico, on Saturday for the UFC Mexico City fight night card. In the main event, former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno took on Lone’er Kavanagh, who took the fight on short notice.

Entering the bout, Moreno was coming off a TKO loss to Tatsuro Taira back in December, which snapped his two-fight winning streak. Kavanagh, meanwhile, was coming off a KO loss to Charles Johnson, which was his first career loss.

Ultimately, it was Kavanagh who scored the upset decision win over Moreno as he landed the more damaging shots. Following UFC Mexico City, here is what should be next for the flyweight contenders.

Lone’er Kavanagh

Lone’er Kavanagh stepped up on short notice to face Brandon Moreno at UFC Mexico City, and he entered the bout as a sizable underdog. Yet, the 26-year-old prospect fought well as he went after Moreno’s calf while also landing the more damaging punches to get a decision win.

With Kavanagh pulling off the upset at UFC Mexico City, he now enters the top-10 at flyweight. The Brit should get another big name next, as he’s likely a win or two away from a title shot. A logical next fight is to face Brandon Royval, who’s ranked fourth and coming off a KO loss to Manel Kape and needs a step-down in the rankings.

Brandon Moreno

Brandon Moreno got a chance to fight in his country at UFC Mexico City, but he fell short and suffered a stunning decision loss. Moreno struggled to get going as he wasn’t active on the feet and had trouble once Kavanagh went after his calf.

Following the loss at UFC Mexico City, Moreno will be back to the drawing board as he’s well out of title contention now at flyweight. Moreno will likely return in late summer, and a logical next opponent is to face Alex Perez, who deserves a chance to fight a top-10 opponent.
