REPORT: Brandon Moreno set to fight top flyweight prospect in new UFC Mexico City main event

Two-time UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno will fight one of the division’s most intriguing prospects at UFC Mexico City.
Brandon Moreno will make a quick turnaround at UFC Mexico City later this month, as the former UFC flyweight champion looks to get back into the division’s title mix. After a controversial loss to Tatsuro Taira at UFC 323, Moreno was scheduled to fight surging contender Asu Almabayev in the UFC Mexico City headliner.
But, Moreno got some bad news this week as it was reported by Ag.Fight and other outlets that Almabayev was forced to withdraw from their scheduled fight. As of this writing, the exact reason behind Almabayev’s withdrawal remains unclear.
It wasn’t clear whether or not Moreno would remain on the UFC Mexico City card weeks out from the fight following Almabayev’s pullout. But, Moreno got some good news as the matchmakers have reportedly found the two-time champion a new opponent for his homecoming fight.
Brandon Moreno set to fight flyweight coming off of first career loss at UFC Mexico
Moreno will reportedly fight Lone’er Kavanagh (9-1-0) in the new UFC Mexico City main event on February 28th. MMA journalist Al Zullino was the first to report the news of the Moreno vs. Kavanagh booking.
Kavanagh was scheduled to fight Bruno Silva on March 14th before getting the short-notice call to fight Moreno. The Dana White’s Contender Series alum is coming off of his first-career loss by TKO to Charles Johnson last August.
Now, Kavanagh faces a potential No. 1 contender fight against Moreno at UFC Mexico City, which is easily the biggest fight of his career. UFC Mexico City also features the returns of top names like Daniel Zellhuber, Bobby Green, and Marlon Vera on the card.
