Amanda Nunes breaks silence on UFC 324 fight falling through: ‘Let’s see if we wait for Kayla or not’

Amanda Nunes has finally broken her silence on her UFC 324 fight falling through.
Nunes was supposed to make her return to the Octagon on Saturday against Kayla Harrison for the women’s bantamweight title. It was a highly-anticipated bout, but unfortnately, a neck injury to Harrison forced her to pull out of the fight. Since Harrison pulled out, Nunes hasn’t said anything, but she finally broke her silence.
Speaking in Portuguese on a video posted on the UFC’s YouTube channel, Nunes admitted the news was disappointing.
“The news about Kayla going through surgery and everything made me sad because I prepared myself a lot,” Nunes said. “My training camp was perfect. I was prepared physically, mentally, and spiritually, so it’s hard not to get sad with all of that. But what can we do, right? That’s not under our control. Now we just wait and see what the UFC is going to do.”
Nunes won’t be fighting on Saturday as she will wait and see how long Harrison is out for.
Amanda Nunes will only fight for the undisputed belt
However, one thing Nunes made clear was that she won’t be fighting for an interim belt. So, it’s either Harrison or fighting for the vacant title if the champ is forced to vacate due to the injury.
‘”People are talking about an interim belt or fighting someone else, but guys, that’s not happening,” Nunes said. “I only fight for the real belt. If the UFC vacates the belt and finds an opponent, then I fight. But no interim belt for me.
“I also don’t want to fight another opponent now, that’s not an option. So let’s see if we wait for Kayla or not and see what’s going to happen,” Nunes concluded. “But one thing is for sure: I feel good, I’m training a lot, I’m strong, motivated, and I’m 37 years old with a lot of energy. I’m ready to get my belt back.”
Amanda Nunes retired following her decision win over Irene Aldana in 2023.
